Is 1000watt HPS to much?

I have the opportunity to pick up a 1000 watt mh/hps switchable for a great price, but i dont know if i have the room! The hood is 19.5 by 19.5in, but my closet is only 24 in deep and 7.5 feet wide. I am afraid i will overpower the small space and heat may become a problem.

Has anyone got a good way of dealing with heat in a closet with sliding glass doors?...save leaving the door open...

There is no way your going to fit that light in there with only 2 feet of vertical space, a small hps may work but you'll still have height issues and will probably need to do a Screen of Green. Look in the growfaq for info on it.

i'd throw it on a mover and cover the whole 7+ feet. then i would cut a hole in the ceiling and install a FAT exhaust fan. otherwise you will just be making toast.

Are you renting or own it? with that much heat you have too exhaust it out of the closet. You also need fresh air supply. You can do it ,I have cut a hole in the cealing put in a aircondition vent and a exhast vent .400watt hps with a cool shade hooked to a 200 cfm fan exhuasting into the attic. It works for me. Peace

i say go for it! it can work with an aircooled hood on a closed system(squirel cage or inline 6in 449cfm). the room will get warm, though, and you can use a small exaust fan. even if you dont put it in now, when you ofind deals you should jump on it cause later on you might need it. and if not you can sell it here! but as long as the light has a sealed reflector/hood and that air doesnt come into contact with the grow room air you will never have a problem with heat. (i had to do this fo my moms light cause its over 90 degrees during the day where she lives) good luck!

thanks so much for your help guys! I am renting, but where i live its the only option. I was considering making some sort of 8 inch wide false wall of sorts and putting in 2 or 3 fans with ducting to put in air at the bottom and suck out air from the lamp and from the very top of the closet. Its just a matter of how since I live in an area where none i know owns so much as a power drill.

Toke your room looks great!... So lucky to be able to pipe your heat out of the top that way.
and Sk3tch3- The real reason that i want to be able to jump on this deal is that it looks like my roommate may move out of our 2 bedroom when he graduates and finds a job elsewhere. If he does i want to use my bedroom as a dedicated grow room and live in his. BTW, the lamp i'm looking at isnt sealed (the guy said that its drilled and has brackets for mounting safety glass) All i've seen in it is that it has a big port to hook up a vent, is it enough if i just hook a hose up to that port and run the heat strait from there?

yes, it will definitely help to suck ANY heat off that light. it has to be vented outside the room some how. can use make a door out of black plastic? make it shorter than the regular door and vent it out above the plastic door. you can even remove the doors and just staple a whole wall of plastic. cut out a door and cover with a larger piece. i used gorilla tape, staples and velcro on my room. it worked really well.

most hydrofarm reflectors have removable vents for flanges. flanges are 15.99/ pr and most are setup to have glass slid into it. the reason i suggest it is cause my moms closet is similar but it gets really hot where she lives outside, even with the A/C intake directed into the closet floor and a 6in vortex exaust. it was 89 degrees peak so i had close the light. now it get 78.2 at the hottest point of the day. prrrrfct. if it doesnt get hot where you live you just put the exaust attatched to you hood/reflector and have your light be a passive intake from your grow room air. cold air intake oppisite on the floor level, osc fans and your good to go. this works really well. warm to hot climates. anyway hope it helps...

if you can get it in there width wise, go for it.You have plenty of room in height.

Some kind of ac unit might be your only way if you dont want an inline fan and filter, which you might need anyways. Its going to be roasting in there without either
