I think I get it bro! Thanks. So if one were to desire to run only a single cob near its rated wattage limit, one might opt for the 48v with a single COB at that voltage. And the resistance of the COB will only pull the rated amperes its designed for. Heat loss? Or heat find? Gotta be heat when you are pushing the limits right? Like the bright violence of the sun. Sorry. Woke up at 4:20 and my cognitive thinking may be a little off. I ain't leaving the house today. Plus that whiskey from last night damn. Let's all be responsible potheads.

So, if one desired to run only one COB. The 48 at 185? So now what does that 185 describe? It says 4.25 Amps.

I'll read that link. I must understand what I am doing and I do appreciate all of your input. Thanks for your patience. Peace and love since 4:20 am. :eyesmoke:

P.S. I searched for a Peace and Love GIF. That beautiful thing popped up and I had to just go with it.
Great GIF lol but I wish she wasn't so good at the game!

To run just 1 single COB on either of these drivers... It will have to be a big COB like CLU058 3618. I think that anything smaller simply will not draw enough voltage from the constant current driver, or will be getting more than it's maximum current from the constant voltage driver.

yes its hard to find constant current drivers that run cobs to their 3000ma-5000ma limit

no you control the current via a dimming pot or potentiometer in the case that the driver current exceeds the cob capacity. like that 4.2A driver will smoke a cxb3590 (3600 mA max) but not a clu058-1825 (5700mA max)

theres always heat but yes, more wattage= more heat

for one cob an HLG120H-48A is a better bet. i have those but not up on the site yet. its 2.95A max

you need some serious cooling to push 4A into a COB

also the 185 means wattage (nominal 185W, really 200 on datasheet, max 225W)

thats a 100V cob and wont work. in fact an 1825 can only be driven out to 2000 or so mA as its at 53V at that point
i have 2 1825s on one of those drivers and it works fine

Oh yeah of course 53V is the limit. Duh.

So yeah, not ideal drivers for a single COB setup.

Thanks for the knowledge and patience man. I am considering that smaller driver as well.

Thing is, I am putting this thing together in my head in different ways. The larger driver, I can also dim down which would still be pushing the COB pretty hard so. I am thinking about the cooling issue also but, really want to use this old bad ass CPU cooler and fan just because. It's a guy thing. That's kinda what we men do lol.

Anyway, one idea is to build and test one COB, hang the driver remote like an HID driver and the cob will hang in its own enclosure. Later on down the road, I am thinking I can get another complete light engine, perhaps another color spectrum, and make a simple enclosure and hang it on the other side at like a 45 degree angle to the grow area. Which is what I do with my small HPS and LED UFO. I just rotate the pot everyday. It works. If I do the remote thing with 2 COBs, I can use simple Wago plugs and maybe add a couple of single polls or something.

Anyway. I am still up in the air about it all right now. I Can go with the single 058-1825 and my cooler, with the larger driver dimmed, for now and have room to expand to 2 or 3 and possibly just get rid of the older HPS and LED for additional lighting. Or as a simple test project I could just get that smaller driver, use my cooler and dim it down with the 1212 or 1818. Have a simple all in one COB light experiment for at about or under $50. And use my other stuff and just have a light smorgasbord going on in my closet lol. It's all good bro. Again we appreciate you sharing your expertise.

Cobkits can you recommend and price quote a 4 cob set up with passive cooling that's good value and performance combo? It's going into a 4x4x6.5 tent that has 4 w90s in it now..Thanks

I was trying to get a nice upgrade to my existing setup for around $300 but maybe I should get a quote some other options too. like the six or eight cob options.

8 cxb3070's @50W (1400mA) run very nicely in my 4x3 area.
Each cob produces *approx 9500 lumens
4'x3'=12sq/ft
400W/12sq.ft = approx 34W per sq ft is what I average.
The cxb3070's put out approx 9500Lu per cob
9500Lu x 8 cobs =76000Lu total
76000/12 sq. ft =6334Lu per sq. ft.
If you have 7000+ Lu per sq. ft you are doing VERY well on your lighting in my humble opinion.
If you get 3590's you will be doing a bit better on Lu and efficiency over the 3070's. Theres an $8-$10 gap in the price between the 2 though.....

Will 4x citizen 1825 3500k running on 90W each have the same ore better lumen output ?

actually with the voltage drop with higher Tc i just threw an 1818 and an 1825 on a hlg185h-48a driver (individually) and the driver ran out to 53.5V and took the 1818 to 2.95A and the 1825 out to 4A

so assuming the hlg120h-48A also tops out at 53.5V it would be a good single cob driver to push an 1818 hard (150W, ~122 lm/W), and the hlg185h-48a driver would be a good single cob driver to push an 1825 hard (225W, ~128 lm/W)

That's what I want bro! Push that mofo!

Brang it!

that was on a passive, ill mount up an active light engine with these and see what the voltage profile looks like. i have some 6500k 1825s coming in this week and want to build a 4x200W setup on actives. #vegdominator

Without looking at a datasheet for the citizens I would assume better since you would be driving it with almost 2 times the voltage as mentioned in my post regarding the cxb3070's being driven @ 50W ea.
