Insects !

Hey all,

I was changing my little plants from small pots to a bigger one. After I dropped it into my palm I realized that not only the roots were already searching for more space but I also realized small white insects crawling that went straight into the roots.

Now previously I realized small black flies wondering on the surface of the soil but they never sit on my plants, only the soil. Assuming the white ones are their little babies (how cute)

Who are they and are they a problem for my roots having in mind that its mainly soil related insect and is not interested with my leafs.

thank you in advance for your replies.

Sounds like fungus gnats. Lots of ways to get rid of them. Chemicals, Sand, Nematodes just to name a few.

hmmm... i searched that and read about it a bit. yes looks like it.

An effective means of detecting the presence of fungus gnat larvae is to insert 1/4 inch slices or wedges of potato into the growing medium. Larvae will migrate to the potato and start feeding within a few days. The potato slices should be turned over to look for larvae present on the underside.

what withoutAchance said and you can just put a nice 2-3 inch layer of perlite on top, keeps them away and the ones that do try to go into the soil get their wings ripped off, problem solved!

lol u really dont think I would do that do u ?

I have also read that you can put those yellow sticky sheets used for flies. That will catch the adults meaning you will reduce that chance of them reproducing and laying eggs. still cant get the perfect solution to kill larvae
