Black is never neutral. The color of the terminal screws should tell you were you need to put the wires. The gold will be hot (Black) the silver will be neutral (white) and the green will be ground. I'm not an electrician. maybe something I'm missing. VV

turns out it was freid so i took it back and he gave me one saying it does 120/220 but it need 220 lead grr can't win with this guy he's nice but can't understand a word outta him

How far away from the panels will it be? There is only one more wire to a 220 cicuit than a 110 circuit. You would have 4 wire instead of three and you will need a 2 pole breaker. The red and black wire are hot, one in each slot of the breaker, the white wir is the nuetral or return and green is still ground. VV
