indoor newbie tent size

Now that I can legally have 2 flowering plants I want to get a tent for my basement. I don’t have any indoor experience so I am looking for some help. What size tent and lighting would you recommend for 2 large plants for maximum yield. I have plenty of room so I can go pretty big if need be. Also I was thinking about led lighting for the electricity bill but I am open to any suggestions. Thanks

a good start is a 4x4ft tent with a 600w hps lamp
now they have LEC lighting which is 315w or 630w, if you have the funds I see good results on photos
I wouldn't really recommend led; some people do but they have $900 for a light, it's more fudging around than growing if you ask me

the basement is a poor location unless you are willing to go all out on the air handling which includes bringing in air from directly outside of building for the plants

air input from basements will give your bud a bad smell, taste, and a unhealthy smoke or edible
i stress this and imagine licking the basement wall, buds absorb smell, fungi, ect.

3 gallon pot is standard for 4-9 plants in a 4x4
for 2 plants you can do 5-7 gallons soil for each plant in a 4x4ft or ~600w

I don’t have any problem with doing it the correct way. What do I do as far as ventilation during the winter months tho?

I'm planning for this fall up in NY. I grow veggies in the summer. I think grow lamps are annoying when there is good sunshine outside.

equipment list:
space heater
x3 in-line blower fans
plug-in thermostat
dampers
carbon filter
hepa filter / bug & dust filter
timer
=about $1000

the dampers (preferably automatic or they don't really work) will stop frigid air from pouring into the tent when not needed. they open when plugged in
plug in thermostat will control the space heater to warm the area when cool air comes in

air would go in&out (exchange) say for 15 minutes every 2 hours.

you'll need an air-cooled reflector light for all this

im doing as-pictured in a 4x4ft tent with 400w HID this fall. success grow:mrgreen: #11

Nice man. Thanks for the pics. I’m thinking about getting a 4x8 for future expansion if legal. The tent will be 80” tall. Do you know if the lec 630 will burn the plants at this height? I was hoping to get one now and add one later if needed. Other wise I might end up with 3 315 lec or 400s.

The distance between plant top and bulb is 36"-12" for pretty much any HID. I recommend a weed grow book which answers many detailed questions. I read this one about 5 times and constantly referenced it. There are many books like it. We don't mind questions but this book answers a question at every page turn.

consider the ceiling height of your grow area, this basement is 7' so my tent is 6.5'
that particular book is a little out of date (they don't mention LEC or LED) but look for a newer one from the same author/series

If you're set on the 2 plant limit I'd look into scrog style growing.. 4x4 a couple 315s.. a decent dehumidifier.. and a 6 or 8" filter/fan.. get a variac style controller if you need to be able to control your fan speeds.. obviously a timer/small fan etc.. but as long as your basement is livable you should be able to do without a space heater imo. Just switch to light on at night to avoid the real cold times if you have to (works if you wanna avoid the real hot times too lol)

Good luck!

Bigger tents are a pain if you're not really running a bunch of plants and have the lights. Harder to move air in, they use a lot of floor space and can't be divided.

So if I accidentally put 8 plants in there I should have 4 315s? The sunplix brand recommended 3 for a 4x8. Anyone using them in a 4x8? Also would there be a benefit to having a separate intake fan with charcoal filter instead of the cheaper ac filters? Or just on fan is enough

4 630s for that size wit 2 8" fans. Plus an oscillating fan and an ion generator.

4 630s in a 4x8x80” won’t burn the plants? The guys from sunplix said the 630s would be too hot. Do have experience with them? I hope so. Lol. I would love to run more power. I have 16 yrs electrical experience so I’m into this kind of stuff.
