In December, at the meeting of the electors, can an elector turn his/her back on the party that selected him/her and vote in favor of the opposing party, rendering the state's popular vote irrelevant?

I'm sure many of you don't know what I'm talking about, but basically, the electoral votes are actual people who gather in December and vote for the president and VP.

I'm wondering if they can just vote for whoever they want regardless of what the state's people voted.
