Hey Tim,
Did you buy this new or use. or was it a gift? I'm asking because you should know the system. Did you get the bulb, socket, reflector and ballast. The light bulb needs to match the ballast rating.ie: 70w,100w,250w ex.and the type of bulb hps or mh/ both. You should check this before hooking up wires.
Like you said you don't want to burn anything down.

I know money is always an issue, but this is an investment.
I will be using 6-8 (4-6 daylight 6500k)(2-4 soft white 2700) cfl's for veg and my hps system for flow. this will be about 3 months from clone to buds. ( i hope)
This is timly.

i think that hsp light would require a ballast, and thats more money, go get some Y connectores so each socket will now be 2 sockets and fill it up with cfl's

The HPS light has a built in ballast and a reflector. It came with an HPS light, and can be interchanged with an MH light. There is two wires that come out of the ballast that I wanted to see if I can put a plug at the end.

If it have a ball built in then all you need it the cord, is that right? What gauge is the 2 wires coming out of the ball. I would buy or look around for a cord that is the same gauge as the ball. I would also make sure to plug this into a surge protector with a timer. and run 18/6. Make sure you wipe the bulb and make it free of any fingerprints.
You can also look up the Man. and look at the specs for this unit, just to make sure.
