im having trouble with measuring the amount of nutrients that go into the soil

huh ????????? dude dont worry about that what you need to do is look on your nutrients and and see how mant ml per litre you need to add never mind about the soil or how much soil you got

use rainwater for the first 3 to 4 weeks(if its sitting outside for a long period, might wanna adjust pH with lemons or something with acidic pH), compost tea(they offer it at your local hydro store, or theres tutorials all over RIU) or bat guano for veg cycles, use a higher p and k level bat guano and blood meal for flower. you might also want to get some compost, i used to put it on the outside of my window and put earthworms in it. its like a trashcan for leftover food if you want to get use for it. after about 2 months(with earthworms) it should be composted good, and if weeds are growing, flip the soil over. the roots just means theres mycorrhyzal bacteria in your roots. and add some perlite to your mix, it should be aerated then.
