Foxfarm Ocean Forest is a good growing medium, but only has enough nutes in it for about 2 weeks. If you'll notice, there is no N-P-K on the bag. They want you to use their liquid nutes in combination with their dirt. I sent some to a lab and here's the N-P-K results .59-.46-.37...pretty low. You end up paying around $180.00 per yard for Ocean Forest plus the cost of the nutes. PH can be low due to the fact that they use a lot of peat moss. Promix HP is PH balanced (or close) and consists mostly of peat moss and perlite, but they use dolomite and limestome to balance the PH out. It also has a wetting agent and mycorrhizae. I love Promix. In my area, everyone uses it. I also know a lot of people that swear by Foxfarm. You just gotta keep experimenting until you find the perfect blend for your needs. Good luck to all.

Wow, I tested the pH of my happy frog and it is close to 7.5
Really fucked everything up for me. Must be different for every bag if everyone else's is close to 4-5 ph

iv'e been experiencing serious ph problems after transplanting into happyfrog potting soil. my plants are stunted but still green for some reason. then i did some
research and found a method of doing the soil slurry test and what do you know ? the ph was at 4.3 and the ppm was at 1200 ! i also used a sample from unused happyfrog soil and got a close reading on it too . so , then i sampled some promix and got a reading of 6.5 ph and a ppm of 700 . WTF ?!?!?!?! thankyou foxfarm ! now i have to start all over again !!!!
fox farm is shit man and always will be i have been telling people this for years and each week i get at least 2 people off the foxfarm wagon and convert them so i'm happy if i do this over a 5 year period ff will have no people that will buy there shit and the will have ti lift there game clumpy over ferted shit it is

the straw the broke the camels back for us is when we got a few bags of ffof opened one bag up and there was a dirty gas smelling rag right on top of the soil sent the bags back and we have never got from them closed accounts the lot

Salt build ups over time cause the soil to become "hot". In a 5gal container I grab one handful of dolomite lime when mixing ffof/ffhf 70/30. pH stays up.

i like mixing my own soil use different bases

i've used happy frog and ocean forest in blends that were okay,
but Pro-Mix, Roots, etc etc peat or coco based soil with perlite, mycorrhizae, etc.

plus lime, epsom salts, Oyster shell flour and basalt for minerals and micro nutrients.

and guano, blood meal, bone meal, kelp, alfalfa , for N, P, K.

add extra coco or perlite for drainage
humic acid in powder form
VAM mycorrhizae for roots

mainly water only, use compost tea a few times in the plants life

tea is usually alfalfa, guano, kelp, molasses, etc
high N guano in veg, high P guano in flower,
the kelp and alfalfa are extremely rich in various things like K and i think micro nutrients and the molasses feeds the micro herd in the soil

gotta maintain the beneficials anyways thats my 2 cents on soil and Fox Farm
okay to learn with but there's so much better out there, especially mixing things to your own ratio whether it be from here, experience, friends etc is much better than relying on commercial soil companys :)

I have been growing in HP with ff nutes with OK results except one strain, decided to transplant 1gal to7gal in HF wow turned dark green grew 1 ft. In 2weeks looks very healthy. OK I've read 2tbl. Per gal, 1 cup per gal. 1handfull per 5 gal, of lime. Can you add to much lime? My slurry test on HF 7.0 1200 ??? HP 5.2 2100????

What up Stoner!! I've gotta chime in because I'm usin Happy Frog also, but I'm havin nothing but positive results!! I don't use it straight though, it's about 50/50 mix Happy Frog Natural & Organic, and Black Gold Organic, then I add probably 30% more perlite, few scoops of worm castings, and I've always mixed in dolomite lime ( 1 cup/ cu. ft. ) to stabilize ph. I don't care what the soil bags say, I always just do it. Also, and I'm not sayin you're wrong bro, but I've got 10 bags sittin here, went over one bag three times, and couldn't find a ph level listed on there. It says it has dolomite lime added to it, but doesn't state a level anywhere.

Anyway, I'm feelin your pain, and my only advice would be to amend the Happy Frog somewhat with another medium, that way if one is a little lacking in somethin, or too strong in somethin, you have a buffer to work with, and the other medium will hopefully compensate for any highs or lows. Feel me? And I say, just add the lime; won't hurt anything at worst and it's not expensive at all.

Good luck on your grow!!!:peace:
I’m using hf too, fantastic results right out of the bagE6D94E22-F259-41D7-A285-289E32B04DE5.jpeg

I quit screwing with FF when 2 batch #s had bugs in them. Water and see flies kids! I'm growing in coco using synthetic nutrients the last year or so. Quicker bigger yields but not as good of bud. Nothing compares to organic nutes man.

When did u see bugs because this post is from 2009? Also wondering if anyone recently has pH issues with happy frog as I'm about to use it with another mix

I have ran ocean forest my last to grows straight and my neighbor suggested I used happy frog only and I’m telling you my plants are bigger and happier with the frog over o.f I’m into week one of veg and my room already has a funky smell, man happy frog is the shit I haven’t added any nutes yet and they don’t look to need them either I mean my leaves are just as big as my outdoor plants at full veg!!
