IHBH's First Grow! Pineapple Chunk and Super Silver Haze! DWC 400W Grow!

Hello all! I am starting my first grow and would love to have any input/critique that could possibly help!

My Setup:
-400w MH & HPS (I will probably add additional CFL lighting if the circuit and funds allow for it)
-2' EcoLux T8 Lamp Fixture @ 34 Watts
-4' x 2' x 7' Tent
-4" 260 CFM Outake Centrifugal Fan @ 75 watts
-6" 215 CFM Intake Duct Fan @ 35 Watts
-950G/h Air Pump @ 35 Watts
-3 Custom Built DWC Buckets w/Hydroton
-Hanna Instruments TDS Meter (Works very well in case you are looking for a cheap PPM meter)
-General Hydroponics PH Up & PH Down Kit w/PH Tester

My Nutes:
-Entire line of Fox Farm Organic Hydroponic Nutrients
-Roots Organic Bloom Booster
-Superthrive
-Shultz African Violet Soil Drops (These will only be used for the beginning. My dad gave them to me, I saw them on his plants and they worked wonders when they were young.)

My Strains:
-Green House Seeds Super Silver Haze
-Barney's Farm Pineapple Chunk


This is about a week into the grow. I made a $100 seed order and am now only stuck with Pineapple Chunk and Super Silver Haze. I had a Red Cherry Berry Seed, and a Great White Shark Seed, but they weren't fortunate enough to make it so I had to germ the rest I bought

I was trying my hardest not to throw the Sativa in there but I figure I'll get a good crop nonetheless and hopefully potent as can be

Here are some pics of the only Pineapple Chunk seed that made it. It is now ~4 days old and the seed shell just was popped off today!

I was planning on only 3 of the 4 seeds I initially germinated to make it, so since they died I threw in 2 more Pineapple Chunks and a Super Silver Haze seed.

The first picture is the only chunk plant that made it, and the next pictures are the seeds currently undergoing germenation. The first seed is SSH and the second two are the chunks. One of the chunk seeds is showing a root, but the other one just has it's shell cracked.


Questions:

Right now I have Rapid Rooters, I was considering making the change to rockwool cubes after having 3/4 of my seeds die on me. I'm not necessarily blaming the Rapid Rooters but do you guys think it would be worth making the change?

Also, the only nutes I have been giving my seeds/seedlings is a ~150ppm mixture of Grow Big and SuperThrive. I noticed on the leaves there is this orangish tint to them. Could these be too strong? Should I just give them distilled water until I move them to their buckets?

I am in a battle with temperature...where I have them now it stays around 74-80* with out my heat lamp. When I have it on it is around Low 80's to high 80's, but humidity is always 100%. Should I keep using the heat lamp?

IHBH, don't change the rooter plug.
I start mine in them too.
Once you get it damp, it just takes a little to keep it that way.
It's very easy to overwater these and rockwool. But rockwool cause ph problems, rooter don't.
My 5 inch pots are 4 inches tall. I put in 2 inches of hydroton and sat my plug in the center and filled in around it, but don't cover the top. Leave it flush.
I put my pot up to an inch IN THE WATER until the seedlings are about 10 days old, leave drop it an inch under the pots.
Check my thread from the beginning in DWC section : 12/12 from seed and 1st dwc too

Keep them ppm's under 200 the first week, IMHO.
Although some ppl start at up to 300 ppm's from their tap water.

Thanks! I was curious about how people started them from just tiny little things into massive buckets. I guess I'll go pick up some more rooters tomorrow. I just had a lot of trouble getting my seed situated down in there. I realized my main problem was the tap root had nothing to cling on to so the seeds just sat down there and spun until they died. I'll just break one of the rooters up and try and give it a better foundation to dig in.

Did you run air when you had that low water level in there too? Or did you just let your plants sit? I have a pretty powerful airpump, so I wouldn't wanna make them too unstable.

And about how long can expect before the roots shoot through the bottom and I have to transplant them?

vegged White Russian in rapid rooter plugs recently and it was easy ! All i did was take a mechanical pencil marked off 1/4'' with a black marker poked a hole in the rapid rooter moved the mechanical pencil around to make the hole a lil' bigger and popped my germinated seed in.. With in a couple days the sprouted. Just add a 1/4'' of PH water to your tray and spray PH water on them a couple times a day within 1-2 weeks you should start to see a good amount of roots ...You dont need to run any air when you have them in the dome and tray. After they show some roots like they have in my pics below then just transfer the whole plug into the net pot and hydroton.

Wow! Very nice plants! It's making me miss my white strain though :\
I really wanted to grow one dammit!

Anwywho,

I bought some more plugs today and popped my SSH and PC in the plugs and poured some water over them then packed everything back into the dome. Temps were about 78* with out the light, so I cut it back on seeing as it can only help. Temps usually are around 83* with it on so that seems perfect.

I think I was over watering them so I'm only going to do a light mist/spray to get them damp once a day. Let me know if I should do otherwise, but thanks for the help!

Update:

The PC seedling is starting to show her first leaves!

I still have the other PC and SSH seeds in their plugs. The SSH looks like it's pushing up, but I didn't wanna be too invasive and screw up the germination process so I'm just gonna leave it until I see something. I have been watering them once a day, keeping it fairly damp, but not too damp.

Temps are at ~81* and humidity is still 100%.

The yellow spots on the PC plant are dimming so I think the nutrient intake is alright. I was wondering why the stalk is kinda bending, most seedlings I've seen are always shooting straight up.

Could this be a sign of over watering?

Thanks man! Appreciate it! Yeah I did some extensive research on Pineapple Chunk before I decided to make it my main strain. (I plan on having 2 chunk plants and one Silver Haze). I saw one guys grow where his shot through the roof, but he yielded almost 8oz's off of just 4 plants! His humidity was at 100% and his temps were at 90-95, so I figure if they did that good for him they'll do wonders for me!

Hi all! Hope all is going good with ya guys.

Anyways, the Pineapple Chunk plan is starting to show leaves, and I poked it up to find a very nice looking root...

I changed the nutes from 1 Part Big Bloom 1 Part Grow Big and 1 Part SuperThrive. This puts my PPM at ~160 and a PH of probably low 6's.

Still waiting on the two other seeds to show sings of life. I did the rapid rooter plug trick and flipped it upside down, the seeds seem WAY more secure, and thanks for that advice.

I have two questions though, any input would help:

1) Why are my plants leaves curling? Is it normal or should I change the nutes/setup?

2) Should I transplant my plant to my buckets immediately because the taproot is showing or is it alright for it to sit in the bottom collecting nutrients?

Update:

Hi guys! The Pineapple Chunk plant is looking a lot better, I bought some distilled water and added just SuperThrive to it. So the PPM is around 50, and the pH is @ 6.5-6.0

The SSH plant is sprouted and looking great! The seed shell is just about to come off the leaves. It's going strong, I expect it to be a great plant!

None of the other seeds made it, but my friend bought some mids I was able to scrape some bag seeds from. The smoke was alright (blunts!) and the nug was an entire 14 grams, so I assume the genetics couldn't be that terrible

The first four pics, are the PC plant. There is this slight discoloration (it's like white, kinda looks like mold, but doesn't smell?), and I'm wondering if you guys have ever seen these on rapid rooters?

Also, are the leaves shooting straight up, is that expected when there young?

The next one is the SSH plant, it's doing great!

The last two are the bagseeds, there doing alright too, just taking their time

Anyways, any feed back would be great, and suggestions or just conversations. Thanks for looking and have a great night!

hey iv bin tryin to germinate 5 pinapple chunk seeds and they were free from barneys as i had problems wiv germinating the last lot!! how did u germinate ur pineapple chunk??

germinate using the paper towel method found that way worked a charm for me ...... germinated my PC that way !!!!

I know this is an old forum but do the paper towel method like Mag said ^^. I like to put my seeds on top of my comcast box as they germinate (keeps the temperature warm for the sprouts to break). I find this the best way.
