Soil vs hydro is a matter of personal preferences.
Hydro grows fastest without a doubt, but is more unforgiving if left unattended and unchecked for its nute (un)balances...
That said, I am working towards the best of both worlds with organic soil and a slow dripper at the same time, with a water timer setting of multiple drip cycles per day, and this will also decrease the amount of water used, and/or needed; which also helps get that "hydro grow" and will add to its faster growth.
I use subcool's supersoil mix on the bottom, and with fox farm ocean forest on top(12.99 a bag for me, I cant beat that price)- just add water and leave the nutes up to the plant to decide on what they wish to draw up and when.
I only give them water their whole way throughout their entire lifecycle.
The central philosophy behind the supersoil mix is to "provide the pool of life, and step back and watch the magic occur all by itself." leaving you nothing to guess or worry about... The Supersoil mix is that pool of life. It keeps a plant balanced, and decreases any chances of it becoming out of balance, and you can also throw away the nute and ph measuring sticks pretty much.
I think going organic soil will make your stuff taste a lot better and reduce any harshness in taste and flavor; and upsizing your pots will allow them to grow bigger. 15's like mothers finest suggested should be close enough. smartpots allow best breathability and reduces the water hold around the root base. Plants kinda stop growing if they stay in soggy conditions. Plastic pots allow no breathability value.
I usually go about 19/5 with my veg cycle, leaves process sugars among other things while they sleep, and everything could use a little shut eye on a regular basis. Sleep rejuvenates all creatures as far as I am aware of.
Some like 24/0 like you are running dont get me wrong, but anything thats alive needs some sleep, is my contention on the subject. I provide somewhere between 3 to 5 hours of sleep for em each night, they stay happy and are always reaching for the sun, provided i do not overwater em.
Glad to see you with RO water also, good choice.
