I am growing a strain called grapefruit in a hydro hut with two 400 HPS's. The hut is only 6.5FT tall and the two plants are very readily approaching the roof. Since I've switched to flowering ten days ago, they have probably grown around 8-10inches! I was thinking that since the top of the plant doesn't really have a dominant top cola set, I could in a sense top it now, and the plant would focus most energy in the smaller side branches and stop growing vertically. I know that it will reach my light in a small amount of time and want to avoid any problems now. Anyone have any experience topping a plant this late?

Strain- Grapefruit Clone
Flowering-10 days
Vegged one and half months under 650 watts of HPS with 400 more added at time of flowering.
Medium- Foxfarm Ocean forest with full foxfarm nutrient package.
Complete Co2 system set up at time of flowering constantly maintaining 1500PPM

First pic is of Grapefruit.
Second is bonus pic of FIMed WW who is trying to take over the hut for herself, she hasn't learned to share yet. That is all one plant, over 8 Tops came after FIM cut.

topping will work, but you could just pull the tops over and tie them down, thus encouraging side growth and not causing the amount of stress...

I never thought of topping as much of a stress, I have always viewed it as a redistributions of hormones. Anyone else?

topping is definitely stressful - shouldn't do it during flowering since it will cause your plant to focus energy on repairing the wounds and sprouting new growth instead of focusing on budding like it should. pruning, topping and tying down should be done during vegetative and having a plan for each really helps.

I would recommend either tying it down best you can or just harvesting the top colas if they are ready.
