I know I want a HPS light for my new grow room.....but.

I have a 3 1/2' x 2' grow space I am about to drywall and mylar. It's 6 1/2' from floor to ceiling.

I know I can get away with a 250 digital HPS setup. I'd like to have a good brand with a warranty if possible.

I plan on growing at least 4 plants in this room. I have all the ventilation issues worked out, I'm just trying to pick the right light.

Please don't mention anything but an HPS light, I've read enough to know that's what I want. But if you can talk me into a 400 watt, go for it.

1) Who should I get my light from and does brand and warranty matter?

2) Will I be happier with a 400 watt for shear penetration?

I'm asking this question because of this light I found on eBay. It just seems way to cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/250-WATTS-HPS-MH-DIGITAL-GROW-LIGHT-GIANT-HOOD-BALLAST_W0QQitemZ300412319491QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item45f1f83703

Used 400W in a room with about the same dimensions as yours, no heat issues except when it gets 25 to 30 degC occasionally in the summer. Used Eye brand-happy with performance, and a lumatek ballast-failed after one year so they replaced it with there new adjustable 400W for the price of shipping. Lumatek normally supposed to be reliable except for the 600W without fan. I then went with 600W fan cooled for a bigger room next time ( even though lumatek does't use fan on 400W, just fins, it gets pretty warm and i don't know if this is such a good thing). Also, i don't use the dimmable adjustment, and would not risk using the superlumens setting either as i think this might not be good for the bulb. Oh yeah, and the penetration with a 400 is not great once you are 2-3 ft tall so I think a 250 would only get the top of a short plant (mine usually end up 2 to 3 ft tall in a 6 1/2 foot room. You need to leave about 10-12" from the top to bulb to avoid burn in my room). Hope all this helps-i got carried away.

That's the light i just received 3 days ago, and the change from CFL to HPS is DRAMATIC.
In my opinion, this is a great deal for a HPS+MH system.. But I don't know if you want the MH light..
400w would be nicer obviously, but I just got the 250w for ventilation reasons..
I have a grow tent with your exact dimensions with 2 80 cfm fans, one for exhaust and intake. I also have a small fan circulating the air inside the tent, and the temperatures are consistant at around 75F which was what i was shooting for.

Hope it helped!

i think you could pull off the 400 with the right ventilation, but ventilation will be key. it should work if you can keep it cool with a good air cooled reflector and in line fan. the results will blowe away a 250 hps by far

sencha whats up !

yo i started with a 400 watt hps. They give off a LOT of heat if you dont have an air cooled hood and in my opinion would cause major head issues in that size room if you didnt have an air cooled hood. ( its key because it removes the 80% of the hot air before it even enters the atmosphere of your room ) . With that being said , if you dont have the budget for the air cooled hood, a proper inline fan, and the rest of the equipment needed for the op, i would probably go for the 250 watt. The change from cfl to HPS will be AMAZING! any other questions ... feel free to ask. I wish you the best of luck with your operation and look forward to seeing your nice buds :hump:

if you're doing veg and flowering with the same bulb you might want to look at CMH bulbs if you haven't already. They use standard HPS magnetic core ballasts.

I use two 150w HPS. Id rather use more, lower wattage lights than one high one. I can adjust each lights height, and i get more coverage with 2 than i would with one. I like how they have worked out so ill be getting another one.

Remote ballasts work out great as well by keeping a very hot componant out of the flowering area.

I went HTG supply as well, via ebay.
