Just throwing this out there, but has it crossed your mind that it could have been an animal? If I put any of my potted plants outside, it doesn't take long for a squirrel to get very interested in the contents of fox farms soil. They will dig up most young plants in search of something. Then of course, add the fact that yours were in peat pots, which probably makes for decent nesting material.Then I come outside a couple minutes ago to check on them and all 6 plants are gone and some dirt is spilled. I looked for footprints and couldn't find any.
If it was in no way an animal, then you have some dumb thieves around you. The culprit is probably 13.
