I have an idea about moding flood and drain, any reason why not?

So I am an experienced gorilla grower, forced to move indoors. Going indoor im going to hydro. This maybe old, but i havn't seen it, atleast put this simply.

My question is do you think it will work. Any reasons why it wouldn't.

Im useing what i guess would be called an auto siphon. In the first picture, you see the basics of how the top tank with the roots fills up.

In the second picture you see the water filling the tank and then in the purple square the water overflows down the pvc pipe. The flow should keep up the suction untill the water level is below the intake for that pvc pipe.

Why not have the pump, pump into the bottom when the pump goes off it will act as the return. Still will need the over flow. Gravity is heavy man :blsmoke:.

cool concept however if you mount the fill at the bottom gravity will drain it back for you when the pump is off.

Ok i get it, but that wouldnt mess up your pump?

Besides i had planned on useing a small, weak pump that would be running 24/7. I am going to get a pump small enough that it fills and drains once ever 3-4 hours. I should have mentioned that but my mind if racing.

But if i get the right sized pump, when the timer shuts it off the water just runs backwards through the pump?

Yeah, get the right sized pump to fill your plant bed in 5 minutes or less, and then the drain time will add to the total flood time. The pump will turn off, and the soup will drain through it, it doesn't damage the pump. We call this a suction/siphon. You only need the overflow drain as a backup if your timing is good, and the timer doesn't break.

This is basically what I've got going on. I think it works wonders, just have a timer on the pump to go on a few times a day.. if you'd like to keep the roots wet longer, or the pump turned on less, use some kind of absorbent material in the root basket/pot/whatever you're using... its also a good idea to cover the drains with mesh of some kind to keep from clogging your pump or getting anything in your reservoir..
