I got electrocuted

I am a handyman but when I'm baked I do stupid things...:wall:
I'm currently wiring a new "extension" from a socket in the hallway into my growroom. I put the electric plug in the socket only to mesure the length of the extension wire. Cut the wire and started to "mount" it to the wall. When I was done with that it was time to connect it to the fan I was gonna mount. I pulled the wire to straighten it out and..ZAP:o
220 volts through my right hand :clap: I can tell u guys and gurls I got pretty shook up. It felt kinda like a burnt sensation wich pretty fast went to a tingeling all over my body...and left me with a stiff right hand and still 15mins after the ZAP my thumb, index finger and "long finger" are still pretty stiff. :-|

I'm telling u all bout this experience in hope to raise the safety question...and of course for few laughs :hug:
BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU'RE DOING ALL KIND OF BUILDING/WIRING IN YOUR GROW ROOM, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE BAKED!

Holy crap, im sorry man. I have been zapped by 120v a few times, but never 220. I have never even heard a 220 short (ive heard its scary).


Careful!, imagine if it was your other hand that was grounded! Right through your body!



Lesson : Don't do electrical stuff baked :P

Once while working on a roof i slipped and tried to ketch my balance by grabbing a 440v weather head...I blacked out and ended up falling 8ft into a shed thru the roof, when i was woken up by a co worker.

It sux dont it,i stepped on a cord in my room that had been chewed by a rabbit,it fukin hurt & ur right it feels like ur on fire.Shook me up for a while.

Forgive me here, but you did describe yourself as a handyman: at what point did that seem like a good idea ? lol.
I'm not ripping on you , just pointing out that most guys who get busted do so for dumb reasons - electrical fires and loose lips.

And then you cut a (now hot) 220 line ? Just curious but how did you get through it without your cutters shorting it and blowing the breaker ?

DnaK, how is it you've never heard of a 220 short but you HAVE heard that a 220 short is scary ?
Maybe I'm too baked myself atm, but I don't get it...
And some part of him WAS grounded (feet) or he wouldn't have felt it. Hehe, this is why safety boots have dielectric soles !

Don't get me wrong, I've gotten a few good pokes myself - one threw me across the boat I was working on and it was a REALLY dumb mistake: I took the shield off the back of the AC breakers because it was in my way, then promptly forgot that I had taken the shield off the back of the AC breakers....dumb dumb dumb.

You know, maybe the guys that are growing under LEDs do have an advantage !!

Now I have calmed down and I'm going back in. Seems that many people have had accidents w electric, maybe should "Sticky" this thread LOL! Keep posting ur "accidents" so people can learn from them...

Stapling up christmas lights in the dark while they're plugged in...dumb idea. Made me cry, not because of the pain but because of the startle. It was pretty damn painful, though.

And if we're being technical here, you wouldn't be typing or breathing for that matter if you were electrocuted. Kind of like saying I went swimming yesterday and drowned but I'm ok now.

tried to change an outlet. got a spark with the breaker off. Touched a camera capacitor once, flew off my bed. I was in jr high, lol.

I saw this guy on nat geo that some how can take electricity up the ass. Not a trick but some tv repair man that sits there and holds the 220 and 120 lines with his hands and suffers nothing! They then found a woman that lets off more electricity than normal in her body by like three times. She ruins watches everyday. Lol. GL all.

First of all, I love ur avatar ;) Second, I had allready made an estimate and cut the wire (that I remembered to do when it was unplugged), then I plugged it in to mount the wire along the wall and keep it streched, I wasn't thinking I had allready cut the other end and when I got to "the other end" I had forgotten it was plugged to the wall...I was baked, obviously. I remember the whole scenario now...was pretty shook up when I wrote the first post.

English is not my mother tongue but this is what i googled and fer sure it say it's not correct, but it also says it's used to describe an accidental injury. :bigjoint:

Ha ha ha ha ha...made me laugh...the part bout the guy taking current up hes @ss. Ima see if I can find this guy on youtube. :-P

Im a handyman, and have shorted 120v before myself, its not very exciting. My boss though deals with the 220 and tells me stories of a few of the 220 shorts. BOOM. Also i know he grounded himself somehow, my guess was that he had the wires very close together (because it was a cord?) and he grabbed it so it just went through his hand.

You can grab a wire(copper and all) that has electricity running through it, as long as you don't ground yourself, you wont get zapped. That would be accomplished by [touching the electric box, touching a vent or duct, touching the cement foundation, touching the neutral[white] or ground wire[green]].

In your case it was just a short travel through your hand because it was just those wires close together you caught the neutral wire. If you had grabbed just the hot and leaned on ANYTHING grounded, it would travel through your body whereever you touched the ground. So grab the hot with your left, and the neutral with your right and you got yourself a shock through your chest.

BUT, 220v is different, i have never been hit with 220v(thank god) and it has 2 "hot" wires. Unlike 120v which has 1. I assume you just caught one of the hot wires, and did not cross both hots, otherwise you really would pay.



@ sick sad little world, i have been electrocuted at least 3-5 times over my 4 years working. Your skin has a MUCH higher resistance DRY, then WET. If your hands and feet are wet then you grab the wires yes its possible death. WORSE YET your INTERNAL resistance is basically nothing and will KILL YOU easy.

theres a lot of ways to get electrocuted. Not every way kills you, some ways will though.

so if anyone bets you they can stick a knife in an outlet and not get zapped, dont throw your money away, they can!

I remember one morning going to do laundry in the basement of my building. There was a huge water leak probably 1 feet deep, and the whole basement enviroment was humid. This I couldnt see from the top of the stairs cuz its' "bent". I pushed the light switch and I remeber feeling that burnt sensation all over my body...the light switch was wet...

Ty for caring and ty all for sharing ur experience w electrical "accidents". I decided not to do any more wiring tonight...I'm gonna be 1 hour late to w.e I'm doing so I can get the fan mounted this morning ;) I've seen my bullterrier chew off wires when he was a puppy...now I know how he felt...

Two "near death" experiences in 12 hours. First I get zapped w 220v through my right arm, and today a bus slams the breaks after he had failed to stop at a red light, stopping 2 feet away from me and my dogs...geez. It just wasn't my time...

Sure as hell was a reality check and I got aware of the fragile time on planet earth called LIFE! Time to lite up a fatty and just enjoy time w my dogs watching some olympics...some people downhill on skis..."ski cross" I think it's called...looks hella fun, wanna try it! :blsmoke:

I haven't watched any of the Olympics.... :lol: Oh well..... My spring is here already and I have been building another garden. Dogs included of course.
