I overlooked all of my post since I've been here (so I wouldn't end up repeating myself)....

I am with understanding with using fluro's, T5 is the correct lighting fixture for veg. With that being said however, I have only ever found the fluro tube ballast w/o the bulbs, then in that same aisle, there are the bulbs.....but all I have ever found were T8 fixtures.....if i can remember correctly T8 can't be used. With that said I have went to Wal-Mart, and found some 48" fixtures but they never say wether or not it's for t5, t12, etc.

Where do I look on the hood???......what's worse, is when I look for t5 bulbs I can only find those cabinet fixtures that screw into the underside of it (L = 24" at least)

I must be looking in the wrong place.

Hi Buddy,
t12, t8, and t5 are all fine to use. The main differences are in lumens per watt efficiency, with t12 being the least. T5s are usually High output so they put out as bit more light too. All of that said, all of these flourescents come in colors that are suitable for the plant at its different stages.

But really you should consider a HID setup for the best results.
See fiender,

I do realise that an HPS or an MH are best suitable for their respective stages (MH = veg, HPS = flower), with that being said....I am trying to create the perfect veg zone w/o burning the plants. I also understand that usually buring foiliage means that the lights are being placed too close, with that said....I do also understand that fluros can also burn plants if they're placed too close.

I just thought if I had an fluro-only veg area, the risk factor would be far lower than if I had a bunch of MH. I can't honestly afford venting every MH/HPS light, that was why I thought fluro's would of been the best for a first-timer to growing.

Thanks for your responses,

BW

Go to wal mart. You can get a thing that says GROW LIGHT. Its a 24" t12 that will work and they're only 10 bucks. You can upgrade the light from LOWE's for like 7 bucks. they are 1600 lumen 20w daylight spectrum (6100k) they work wonderfully!!

CFL's are best for veg. if your going to go flourecent. You can check out my grow. I'm using CFL's for veg. and the inside growth is stupid! they are going to look like hedges!

I have a veg area with just 3 24" t5s and a couple of CFL's and it is fine for small plants up to about 14". you probably get the most bang for your buck with the cfl's, you'll just need a few of them when the plant gets big in flower. the t5's might run a little cooler....but the bulb gets hot enough to burn the leaves if they touch it. t12s and t8s tubes stay cool enough that you can grow the plant right up into them without burning.

just a little more info.... i dunno, might help
