Hyrdoton EBB&Flow Flood Height...

Hey guys just a question for you seasoned vets out there....I have a a 4k watter with one 3x6 and two 4x4 trays....On the 3x6 I only have a 40 gallon reservoir and when I flood my 1 gallon square pots the water only goes up about 3 inches or 1/4 up on the pot....Im curious if the hydroton can wick the nutrient solution or will I need to get a bigger rez so I can flood higher? I have 35g reservoirs on each 4x4 and that floods real good about 3/4's of the way up the pot.

I appreciate all your feedback....I can get pictures of the flood height if need be :)

thats what hydroton does wicks the moister to the roots till they drop down ive grown hydro a few times not my thing but thats what hydroton does stays wet even if its not touching water retains the moisture in the air

Thanks for the info....The air stones are in my reservoir and its entirely separate from the tray that holds the pots.....I just transplanted the clones and I wasnt sure if the low height would be sufficient enough to reach the roots....I know the roots will eventually grow towards the bottom of the pot but my concern was when I was on the flood cycle if the hydroton would wick up the water even though most of it is not touching the water. I attached some pics so you can see the flood height its at now.

from the looks the water is going above the bottom lip of the pot and i know its sstupid to ask but there are holes in the bottom and hydroton filling the pot if the water i hitting them then yeah it will wick up no prob but if its a short flood mabe increase it for double the time so it has time to wick well imo

I have several more 4x4 trays laying around, I was debating on just switching from the 3x6 tray to two more 4x4's which is easier for me since I dont have to buy a bigger reservoir. If the flood height I have currently is ok, Ill just stick with the 3x6 for this grow.

as long as the water is hitting the hydroton i dont see a problem but like i said im not an expert hydro grower but have done it just alot of my common sense says you should be fine as long as what i stated above is happening lol goodluck but do try to get a more experienced answer too doggie nuts might have somebody there now thats where i help alot of growers new to exp were a big family there share grows and everyday shit etc lots of info here is the link

Ah that makes sense now, yeah there are about 4-5 round holes on the bottom of each pot. I never used Hydroton before, I used the rock wool blocks last time but I was always over watering them no matter what I did so I want to try this hydroton out after reading for countless hours.

Thanks! :) yeah its came a long ways from when I first started!

you might want to consider getting a bigger res. when your plants are grown out a bit bigger they will go through twice as much water & topping off will be daily compared to every three days. i would go with a bigger res then you need say a 70 gal res for two 4x4' trays. easier to manage ph n everything else, nice setup!

Yeah thats what I was thinking was a bigger reservoir....Im probably just going to switch the 3x6 for two more 4x4 trays just because I have them on hand and I can use the 35g ruffneck tubs as reservoirs without shelling 100+ for a new reservoir. Thanks for the input.

you can control how high the flood level is with the higth of the drain tube level, i found flooding to half the depth of the grow container worked the best and the plants wouldn't float, the idea is to use the flooding action like a piston and force out all the old air and pull new air in, i also found flooding 3 times lights on and 1 time lights off worked the best

Thats killer setup man! If flood level is a issue due to rez size, rw is better at wicking and you could
Flood with a lower level in doing so useing less water and geting more time out of your res.

Yeah right on man :)...I tried rockwool before and i sucked at it, i had algae growing on it and in my third week of flower My plants crashed hard. Rockwool is just too easy to overwater :(. I guess i could use panda film to cover the tray which I plan on doing today anyways...hmmm it would be interesting to do half hydroton and rockwool and see how it works out, thanks for the idea!

Yeah Drifter I got the control of the max height down on the two 4x4s but the rez on my 3x6 is only a 40g and it floods to the max height you see in the pics.

Algie doesnt affect anything in your system but panda works well though! In a flood table just flood x3 a day for 15 min during
Bloom and you wont have issue bro!

Yeah Ill give it a try again and see what happens this time. I was flooding once a day for 15 mins and I that still seemed to water log the roots.
