I'm quickly approaching my first harvest grom hydroton and was wondering the same thing. I've been told so long as you give it a really good wash, and then let it fully dry then you shouldnt have any big problems.

Best of luck.

well for what it is worth I had root rot last grow and after the rot I just boiled my hydroton for about 30-45 minutes and then I just put peroxide in a spray bottle. I layed the rocks on cookie sheets and sprayed with the hydrogen peroxide then let em dry for a couple of days. I am now harvesting a jock horror grow without root rot from the same rocks. Maybe it worked but there is my $.02

you can use what ever you want. I have used mine twice now. the second wash wash not that great. just rinsed them well and got as much root material out as I could quickly.
I have had no issues what so ever with my second grow. actually better than I ever could have imagined. I will clean better next time and I will use bleach and rinse well. the manufacturer has cleanning instructions.

I would not recommend bleach it does not always rinse away it leaves this residue/odor. Just my opinion but it is a weed it'll grow anywhere on almost anything right?:peace:

Spruce I will do my best with pics but I am busy with work but it is the weekend. My jocks were sick as hell when I put em' into flower they were maybe 9" tall they flowered fast and thick out of five seeds I had 4 girls one was a "specially challenged" one so 3 made it. Two are tall and lanky Sativa? and one is Indica? short and fat. ALL have major fucking crystals man and all cloned succesfully 2 each 2 weeks into flower. One thing is I ordered these aout a year and a half ago so I remember mine said flower time 8 weeks and it sure was 8 weeks brotha.:joint:

I re-use...

When I re-use they go into 2 piles...

One that was above the flood line... with no root matter...

and the other with the roots...

I try to shake off the hydroton from the roots before they dry and get brittle...

I wash it with hot water and let dry before re-use..

and I MAKE SURE to use a good enzyme to help break down the root matter that did make it's way INTO the pellets...

As long as you have pathogen control (enzymes or H2O2) there should be no problem if you wash it good...

that shit is not cheap....

My 2 cents...

Ya man. Reuse it.
Not that I'm a pro but heres my step-by-step what I would do.

Pull roots out to seperate the 'rooted' hydroton from non-rooted.
Run a comb or some chopsticks through the roots and remove all the hydroton.
Handful by handful, put the hydroton back into the pot you removed the root mass from, and pick out any root pieces.
Rinse it well with hot water.
Put it back where it was and put new seeds in it.

the way i do it is dump it all into a kiddie swiming pool ( minus the root balls) and flood and drain it a couple times with plain water, then after the water seems pretty clean i fill and add like an oz. per gal of h202 and let 'em soak for a hour or so
