Hydroponic system desinfection while plants in res

I ran sterile for years - no chlorine, no peroxide - just tap and GH 3 part. No problem for years. It eventually creeped in. I don't know of a single hydro grower in SoCal who doesn't deal with it. Pythium spores are present on the legs of fungus gnats and can spread that way as well.

I run Hydroguard in ebb and flow buckets and never have an issue with it.
Yup SoCal grower here too. 3 runs on no sterile or bennies and on my 4th run, boom got the bad stuff..and everytime thereafter. Fortunately for me I just add about 10 or 15mL H202 every few days and it keeps my water crystal clear. Tried hydroguard but after a few weeks it would just revert back to nasty water.

yep, i do tomatoes in my outdoor ghouse in hempys.

what nutes do you use for your veggies?

i've been on age old organics fish and seaweed mix ( i think tha'ts what its called)
Compost and tea lol. I keep it simple. I raise livestock, so I have plenty of sources for nutrition. Would be a waste not to use it lol.

FYI, peas and beans do extremely well in hempys too.

by the way is the brown slime on tubing ALWAYS algae or could it be bacillus colonies?
i used to advocate using a little molasses in the hydro 10ml per gal when I top feed my pots 30ml mixed into 3 gallons then top fed into filled pots which dilutes it down even more. But last time I over did it and jacked up my plants and it has taken a month to recover.

So I say dont use molasses in hydro now. Dont use h202 unless you know what your doing as that can burn fine root hairs. As for bleach dont use it unless you know what your doing.

Keep hitting it with the bennies since you posted good results doing that. use very little all the time to stretch it out, like quarter strength twice a week.

DONT use h202 as that will kill off all the good bennies along with the bad bennies and then when that happens the bad bennies take over then bam root rot.

and dont use a lot of organics in a hydro system either. Like if your going to make a proper tea use it one day then change the water out the next. Organics in hydro is a great start to get root rot or to get bad shit happening

I think bad "bennies" are winning =( so I have to use h2o2, have found 30% medical h2o2 solution. Can anyone suggest concentration to kill root rot? A lot of misinfromation on the net, one table spoon, 3ml per gallon...

Example, if your ph and ppm are both rising... Algae.

PPM ALWAYS rise's in hydro! The plant actually puts back waste materials that raise the ppm's!

You should not be topping off with 100% strength feed solution either......It can be done but, not good for the plant and potential goals.

Dumping and refilling is for a REASON and need to be followed on a proper schedule.... You do not skip this step in hydro growing to save money or whatever reason you might...

There is a simple way to add back and know when to dump....

I've always done hydro because I've always done hydro, but my next grow will be coco. Have you SEEN Mr Canuck on youtube? He makes me practically ashamed of myself.

It's not the media!

It's what he use's and how he use's it.....In relationship to his tightly controlled environment....

I grow all soil.... Doesn't matter, organic or synthetic runs......I can match hydro yields all day long.....I can not match the speed of any hydro style but, hydro can not match my terp profiles.....Taste baby, taste!

You and I both know I threw an example out, hence I said EXAMPLE. It was just to push the importance of ppm and ph with diagnosis.

Anyhow, ppm rises from waste, but falls from feeding, so I disagree if you if you say ppm ONLY rises. Otherwise, how would you know when to feed? Or if it's overfed? Or if it's not feeding?

I'm ocd af. My friends "joke" that my garage is cleaner than my actual house.

I bleach my whole system in between runs. The Hydroguard takes care of my roots, so pythium is never an issue for me.
Oh yea, bleaching is a must lol. Never used hydroguard or anything of the like but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure lol.

I miss hydro so bad. I'm jealous lol. The hempy buckets satisfy me for now though, just not the same level.

I never liked bleach for sanitizing hydro equipment. Time in contact, residue and difficulty rinsing it away....

Get 40% Hydrogen peroxide from a beauty supply store and mix a 10 or 12 % solution and use that....Kills everything , and I mean everything....on contact! USE GLOVES at all times when handling the 40% and the sanitizing 10-12%!

4 parts water to 1 part 40% makes 10%

No gloves with bleach. Bleach washes off just fine. Bleach is fine for purifying drinking water. You're on crack.

You set your res solution.
As the plant grows.. The res ppm rise's - period.....adding back is is simple......But, yes. When you add back. the ppm's of the res fall some. Your not understanding my point.

You add back to the res to be at the same volume you started with.
You add back a 33% feed solution. (1 part 100% and 3 parts water)
Once the total amount of adding back is equal to or damn close to the original volume used to fill the res.
You dump and refill with fresh 100% feed solution...

This formula goes back to the heady first years of hydro growing. A tried and true formula to follow for smooth growth and less feeding issues.

What he uses and how he uses it is incredibly simple, though. Premix the coco with fert when filling his pots, feed by top dressing a couple times throughout the entire grow. Hand water with PH'd RO when it needs it. Here I am on hydro trying to make sure my watering schedule is on point, check the PH and PPM daily, dump and refill the res weekly, following a nutrient schedule and adjusting as necessary. There's a lot more room for error that detracts from the best-case hydro payoff.
As far as terp profile, I haven't really been able to experience that... I've tried what I grew and I've tried a lot of strains on the Colorado recreational market and I haven't really liked anything store bought as much as what I've grown myself. And that might just be my own bias.

I get tired of you...insulting childish troll.

Bleach takes 3 complete rinse's to be cleared off....
Bleach is very bad for the environment. You pour it down a drain and it doesn't just go away....

How about reading up on USDA guidelines for sanitizing?

There are reasons's that bleach is not used in many sanitizing situations......

No, it does not rise period. If it's constantly rising you have an issue.

I don't know what in the hell you are talking about, but I was taught much differently apparently.

If ppm rises, add water. If ppm drops, add feed. If ppm stays the same, empty, refill, and rinse roots. It's THAT simple.

It's been used in kitchens, households, water purification tablets, etc for decades.

You do what you want, I'll do the same.
