i was getting ready to test runoff ph and i noticed hundreds of caterpillar looking bugs in runoff water. they are rather small and can be seen with naked eye. a 30x microscope was needed to identify the looks. any ideas?

looks like fungus gnat larvae. they feed off of dead tissue in the root system. If you see little fruit fly-like gnats in your room then thats most likely your culprit. the best treatment for gnat larvae, or any other type of small crawly worm-like larval creatures, is Bacillus thurengensis. Also called BT or Gnatrol.

thanks for the reply. i ended up having ph issues also so i flushed the soil with a few gallons of water (to wash away any salts or critters) i then added permethrin to water and flushed with that. let it sit for a minute then flushed with more water. plants took it fine.

i appreciate the information.
