hps vs mh

Mothers and clones with no veg time.. I have 400w hps n mh bulbs and one 400w ballast ,and one cool tube. However, I have a 250w high or low bay warehouse light that came to me equipped with a hps bulb I could use.. I've read about using hps for veg/ mothers and clones. How does this differ from using mh? Besides spectrum being the obvious difference.. r there any drawbacks or disadvantages to using hps over mh? I'm also wondering if my 250w (TYPE: "s50") is mh compatable? Here is a pic of the light in ?

Unless your 400w ballast is a universal or conversion style ballast, which I'm not sure they even make for a 400w, you'll have to stay with what the ballast is rated for. It's not possible otherwise to run a HPS bulb in a MH ballast or vise-versa. The 250w HPS can be used for your mothers and veg, though it seems you claim you're not going to use a veg stage. But for clones, low wattage flour. tube or CFL (15 watt) bulbs work best. The heavier blue spectrum flours. produce encourages faster root development. And plants root best under low levels of light. MH bulbs also produce more light in the blue spectrum than HPS, and are sometimes preferred by growers during the veg stage. But nothing beats HPS for flowering.
