HPS vs CFLS heat question

I am about to upgrade from CFLs to a 400w HPS. Before I decide on which system to buy I have one major question regarding heat difference between the two. I currently have 10 26w and one 52w soft white CFLs. I have a cheapo home depo bathroom exhaust fan over the fixture moving hot air out. How much hotter will the HPS get the room? Should I spend the extra money on the ones with fancy cooling ducts or can i get away with a cheapo hood with my exhaust fan directly above it?

Spend the money on the ones with the "fancy cooling ducts", and get yourself a reasonable inline fan to cool the light - the combination of those two will be the best money you've spent for your grow.

How much will an inline fan run me?

it matters how long you have the hps on but get the one with a cooling thing on it.

my closet gets hot with a 400w hps so i had to put a wall mount fan in there and its still warm in there

Um, "much" hotter?

It's amazing that people don't realize the number of variables that go into computing these things and think that someone could just "know" exactly what kind of closet, the ambient temp, the ventilation, etc.

Jesus dude, you got some solid replies to your question, and now you're being rude - not very becoming behavior, IMHO.

Good luck to you on your grow.

Don't be so easily offended i understand the variables i just wanted a general answer based on experience. My closet is by an ac vent and stays cool with a shitload of cfls in it and is well ventalated. sorry i didn't mean for that to sound like it did thats why i edited it. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I appreciate the help

No worries man, I'm in kind of a shitty mood today because of some electrical issues I've got going on.

Honestly though, there's no real "good" answer to your question, except to try it out.

I've got a 4x4x7 grow tent with a 400 watt light in there, and have a 6" inline fan pulling through the light and also exhausting the tent, and a 4" inline for intake, and it only gets about 1 to 1.5 degrees warmer than the air outside the tent.

So if your ventilation is cool, you're gonna be fine - just don't skimp on fans, you'll be sorry you did.

No worries i am a little rushed too thats why i might have come off as impatient.I am thinking i might go with a basic one and build a hood with inline fan if i need. I got more fans than i can use. The closet is 5x10 with very high ceiling.

With that size room and a 400, with just mediocre ventilation you'll be fine.

With good ventilation, you'll be running about equal to the ambient temps surrounding your area.

Good luck to you.
