HPS problems

So I buy a used HTG Supply 400 watt HPS grow light and a new GrowPower 400 watt HO HPS full spectrum lamp. I turn it on and it just sits there for hours on end glowing a very faint purple. Anyone had this problem or did I just spend everything I had on a 50 pound paper weight? I would appreciate any advice because I am seriously bummed out about it all and will have nothing to drown my sorrows with until I grow it myself.

I bought a light from them that didn't work and I told them it was the ballast so they sent me another light bulb..... They try hard to compinsate for their mistakes, but its very time consuming.

Sounds to me that either the bulb is shot or the ignighter inside the balllast is toasted.

I know you said you bought it used, does the seller have his recipt from HTG,if so & its still in warrenty then your all set,HTG is a great place & works well on claims,i bought 6 light systems from them & 1 system arrived with major damage from shipping, they hooked me right up with a new system within 1 week.

Thanks for the replies guys. The guy from greatlights4less that I bought the bulb from said they were having alot of problems with bulbs being damaged in transit so he said he would be sending me a new one for free. He was very nice about it even though I told him I didn't know if it was a bulb problem since I bought the ballast used, he still offered me a refund or a new bulb. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that I just only got a bad bulb.
