hps light didn't turn on in my flowring room this morning

i woke up this morning and to my surprise the hps light had not turned on in my flowering room. i opened the space and discovered the bulb emitting a blue glow but no sun light. did my bulb burn out or do i need to replace the ballast?
 
Can't say for sure but I know it's cheaper to buy a new bulb to test than a new ballast. You might want to try that first, hopefully that'll do it.
 
IF your bulb is emitting a glow....its not burnt out. Sounds like your ballast didn't fire up the bulb properly, how old is the ballast?
 
i bought the ballast from some guy on craigslist. i know i know. serves me right. i'm considering just buying (2) 400 watt ballast, bulb, and lamp instead of (1) 1000 watt set up. i have my room in a closet space though. 52inx24inx5ft., and i want to stack 2 trays with 18 plants each in a SOG. your thoughts are greatly appreciated..
 
unplug the ballast for 5 minutes, maybe it needs to reset.....every time the power flickers my bulbs do that...
 
Wouldn't hurt to remove the bulb and screw it in again, maybe it's not completely secure now. I only say that because it happened to me before. Regarding your potential plan, I think you'd be better served using two 600w lights.
 
thanks for the suggestion. i'll try it when i get home for work.honestly, i'm kinda ashamed to say i overlooked all the troubleshooting steps. i automatically assumed the ballast pooped out on me. regardless, i'm taking it in to my local hydroponic dealer to see what's up. i can't have this happen again. my ladies need all the lumens they can get. i appreciate your advice.

is there any way to avoid the varience? i can't have the lights go out, especially when i'm not home. thanks for the advice, by the way.

Unfortunatly, no not without an automated system in place,not sure if a surge procter would help, even so. all the power did was flicker, like someone ran into a power pole or something:shock:.....it's happened twice while I was at the OP and was able to "catch it", I thought it blu the bulbs the 1st time, so I bought two more. Well, another surge went through and, BOOM, the lite was like the other one....so for shits and giggles, I put the 1st bulb back in, And it worked!!:hump: So I didn't blow the bulb, :clap:it just needed to be reset....Thats my story, and I'm stickin to it.:joint:
 
I too grow in a closet, but it's just a little bigger than yours. 1000w is a lot of heat. Hopefully your light is air cooled and has a strong exhaust fan pulling and pushing the hot air out. Having the room cooler than the closet is key to having a cooling affect on your grow room. If not, hot, hot, and hot.

good story seasmoke. i discovered the bulb was defective. or at least, about to become defective - burnt out. i came home to follow the plan listed above and to my surprise and joy, the bulb burnt out seconds after i plugged the ballast in to test. i'm glad it's just the bulb. my ballast is a hydrofarm. i'm thinking of converting to a digital ballast. any suggestion, recommendation, or thoughts. hortilux for the hps bulb right?

replace your ignitor it went out and needs the extra spark to run it bro
