HPS heat

I just got one 150 watt florolux hps light. I tried air cooling it but the little vents whistle when air gets sucked into it and there is not a lot of air flow. It does keep it nice and cool, but it is unacceptable.

I stopped air cooling it and ran it about 15 minutes and it got really hot! This is my first hps light, but is it normal for the hood to get so hot you can not touch it? I am concerned about fires. Thanks.

i run a 400 watt and yes, it gets pretty hot dude, unfortuantely youll probably have to find a quiet, crafty way to cool ur hood, find a way to get rid of the whistling if u can , the actual heat itself isnt the issue, the heat that radiates from it that heats up the ambient temp of the room, cabinet, tent, etc... if the hood itself isnt touching anything and just hanging in mid air its not the end of the world if it gets hot...although u should cool it

Without air flow the glass will get very hot... The only way to avoid fire risk is to keep everything away from the hood..

Yea bud mazand did good. Like u said its ur first time using HPS. Nothing to wory about. 150 watts should give u to much trouble unless ur in a small area. If so use a t5 flourecent. 150 watt hps's normaly give about 16000 lumens. I have flourecents that can do twice that. a flourecent thats going to give u 16000 lumens is going to b almost 200 watts so itl cost just a tad more but u wont have to wory about heat at all and u can put the light an inch from the bud and not burn them. Ive had veging plants grow into my t5 fictures overnight and not burn lolz.

You know I run a 1,000watt and hood and its just a plain old open "wing style" It seems to me that the only part of it that is to hot to touch is the bulb. I would be very cencerned about the hood being to hot to touch. ESPECIALLY at that low of wattage. If you dont vent it then remove the glass.

Could you not cut the vents out and just leave the ducting attachment on?
Aye, looking at the pictures of it, i can't see a reason you can't just remove the vent with a hacksaw blade etc, or even just remove the glass. Extraction is extraction, i think :D
