Hps 4 veg?

so uhh back to topic lol :). would you guys say that the hps will veg faster than the 2 24in 20w's i got in now on them?

Like others have said, I would think that the HPS would do better than the 2 20w fluros but I would make sure that HPS has some blue light spectrum in it too. Find the HPS bulbs that state they have additional coverage in the blue spectrum compared to standard HPS. I've also read that without the blue spectrum during veg, they have a tendency to produce more males than females. I don't know how true that is since I don't have any first hand experience with it but that is what I read on some posts on here. Maybe do some more searches on it if your interested. GL

That's a lame myth started by Jorge's books, sex has to do with chromosomes. You can't change the sex of a seed with light.

XX = female
XY = male

That is how companies make feminized seeds

I agree with you on that the seeds from start are either male or female. What I don't understand is all this stuff I've been reading that says overstressing plants causes more males. Also that some females can become hermies, etc etc. It makes me think that just maybe during the seedling stage, this is when the male or female is determined kind of like how in humans the baby in the womb is becoming either male or female. Although the seed is already produced after the male pollen interacts with the female to create the seed so maybe that's not it. Ahh I dunno what I'm saying. I need to read more on when the sex is determined in these plants. Something with a good source. I do currently agree though that the sex of the plant is determined before its germinated.

Same thing there as well, sex is determined in humans the moment the sperm penetrates the egg. The sperm carries the missing chromosome, the egg already carries the X chromosome. From there the sperm delivers a X or Y chromosome to complete the chain. XX, XY.

Stress can cause more hermaphrodites. But a better way to say it would be, trying to grow a plant in a environment it is not used to being grown in will cause more hermaphrodites.

Most cases of hermaphrodites are caused by environmental stress, those that are not are caused by genetics and will happen even given the best growing conditions.

I have also observed what some people refer to as " hermaphrodite " is really just a case of over ripening or a genetic asexual trigger that seems to happen in strains.

To me, a hermaphrodite will clearly express both male and female organs at the nodes. In other words, it will grow both pistils and axial limbs with pollen sacks on them.

Over ripening and the genetic asexual feature that I refer to show up as banana's growing straight out of the bud during late development. I do not consider this to be a " true " hermaphrodite.

so my hps is coming in tomorrow..how far away should i put it from my plants? iheard 12-24, but what would you recommend ido have one 12 inch fan blowing

put your hand at the top of the plant, if it burns ur hand then lift it up till it dont, thats the only relaible measure. as for whats better, i used 600 watt hps for veg then added another 400hps on top of that for flower. plants are good but next grow i'm gonna go with 400mh and 600 hps together.

keep the temps cool around the canopy.
go to lowes or home depot and get a meter to tell you temps and humidity.
adjust the light according to how your plants respond.
start far and slowly move closer
