Has anyone ever used the mega ray? Awhile back when I was interested in UV I was looking at one and try we're all sold out. They also stated that you needed to call and ask permission to order it...should only be used by proffesionals.

I do reca however a very respected grower on this forum tried a bunch of different bulbs, combos, etc and basically said that given the amount needed, the flouro tubes were not worth it.
I use the arcadia which are the only fluorescent I tested which do in fact produce enough. I also have Magaray externally ballasts mv zoo bulbs as well as externally ballasted mh zoo bulbs from them. They are used in my personal room overhead to get in down into the plant.

What about using tanning bed bulbs in place of reptile/zoo?.

Never looked into it as they are quite costly and the where to get a fixture. Also do onto know why UVB they emit

I used to have one that was self-ballasted and medium base...lemme do some more homework.

OK I have to ask this: Isn't it pretty dangerous for your eyes? And I'm concerned about my skin too, family history of melanoma see...

So anybody investigate the 'risk-to-reward' ratio here?

Also, I've been reading about these lamps, I noticed the smaller wattage ones (that don't provide enough to supplement canopy) are there to simulate light conditions at the bottom of a forest, the shady part.

Got me thinking, seeing as I get bud all the way down branches, and nice bud too, when growing outside, and some of those bud sites really are shaded meaning they're mostly getting the UV spectrum, perhaps supplementing the LOWER branches with low-wattage UVB might give a similar result. Anybody tried that? If not I'm going to, cheap enough to try on one or two plants so if it does nothing I wouldn't have wasted too much...

If you are in the UK or Europe scan your area as Arcadia is from UK and they are less costly in Europe. Hope it helps

As long as you are 10 inches or more from the lamp you will be no ore exposed to it than you are outdoors

Perhaps, but I'd love to get my hands on a few of these...problem is they don't make them anymore. This 275W bulb will give the average fair skinned individual a real nasty sunburn in less than 20 minutes. And those bulbs lasted forever, had one for almost a decade til' the ballast finally failed.

NICE. My old man built several glass 'sunroofs' in his house, massive planters underneath. Outdoor plants thriving indoors in a bug-free environment, pretty spectacular. DEFINITELY going to use the idea someday, if I actually build my own :)

1. According to my uvb meter these lamps produce 300 -400 uw/cm2 at 12-18 inches from the plants.
2. I supplement uvb from sprout to chop on the same timer as the main lighting
3. see above...the sun emits uvb always
4. start out at 300 for indicas and 400 for sativas...maintained til the end

If I understand it correctly, the UVB lamp should be ~12 inches away for indicas, and ~18 inches away for sativas? (As I understand it, the lamps produce more uw/cm2 the greater the distance)
 
The uvb study which showed higher thc for uvb treated plants could easily be explained by the dry weight of the sample. The uvb treated plants were drier, so naturally more thc per weight. When the scientists talk about why weed in higher elevations has more thc they immediately go to uvb...but why not thinner air or cooler temps at night? Or...drier air?
