it depends how liginified the stems are. some strains have branches with a tendency to split away from the stem if tied too late. gently bend the stem back and forth until you feel it start to soften up. once the stem feels flexible try to bend it into place. watch for breaking and splitting and make sure the bark doesnt tear away from the branch. when you tie it be sure the tie doesn't circle the branch or it could become girdled as it grows. use something thick and soft to tie it. i use bonsai wire but its very expensive, coated 16awg solid core wire works well also. hemp string is also a popular choice. i don't like strings because they can hold water, try to never use yarn.

Here is what I do. Cut a length of low strength chain link so that one side has a hook and has some links for weight depending on how much weight for bending I need. Then as the plant grows, I add chains as needed to the top of the stems so they are arching sufficiently under the lights.

I also grow in tomato cages which helps me to bend and weave.

Sometimes I put too much weight and the stem fails and bends across the cage wire. I usually just take the chain off, weave the bud stem thru the cage so its supported and forget about it as its usually fine and ripens just like the rest.

step 1: wrap "PLANT VELCRO" around main stem, leave 2-3" gap

step 2: tie ANY string to PLANT VELCRO

step 3: tie string down to the pot.

step 4: every 3-7 days pull it down another 3-5 inches.

here is a very simple technique that i use. it takes a wooden clipboard ~$1.00 bundle of string ~$2.00 and a staple gun $5 - 10.

just make sure you bend the branches gradually as in doing it in stages till the branch is as low as you want it.
