How to settle the soil? Smash it or pack it loose? help please!

I searched around but dont know the exact words so when planting vegetables and stuff i see people crumble up the soil and pack it loose sometimes they press it and pack it tight inside the pot so can someone give me a quick tutorial on the best way? thanks
 
i dont pack it at all fill with loose fluffy soil no lumps then i just shake pot untill it settles then water it down a few days in advance
