HOW TO KILL ROOT APHIDS fresh news

One of the guys in our "collective" got an infestation of Root aphids.
He asked for something better then the 3 step program we have used in the past.
I got off my ass and called Bayer CropScience U.S. to bend some ears again. I have dealt with them in Germany in the past and felt that calling the U.S. div. maybe better......

BINGO ! While not exactly new (but now approved across the country). They have 2 things that are aimed exactly at Root Aphids (and other sucking insects) These products were designed to attack "PHYLLOXERA" a type of root aphid that has been a real problem in the wine grape industry here and especially in France.

ULTOR - $280 for 48 oz.
MOVENTO $515 a quart !

This stuff is NOT cheap.....But, at a mix rate of 15 gallons an acre for ground use (not contact spraying) at 5 oz. an acre. That comes down to,,,,,,9.3 grams of insecticide per gallon mix rate!
You could then repackage and sell it on Ebay like Forbid 4F at $ 7.50 an ounce for the Ultra and $17.50 an ounce for the Movento and make enough to off set your original shipping costs and have a cpl of bucks left !

For the COMPLETE pain in the ass it is to get rid of Root Aphids !

I feel this is a GREAT solution to a nasty problem.

Oh yes, He did try the Ultra and got it from "Rogue Farmers" here.
http://www.roguefarmers.com/root-aphid-control/bayer-crop-science-ultor-root-aphids-48oz.html

He reports 100% success with a 2 application ("to be sure" he stated) method to get any hatched after the first application.

The MSDS listed it as a "caution", level insecticide, with only allergic reactions possible! Not a nerve related poison !!!!!!

I thought I would pass this along as I see many having "fungus gnat" troubles they can not cure.....That tells me they are ROOT APHIDS and they USED to be a BITCH to get rid of!!!!

Happy growing

Movento is a systemic pesticide.
We already have a fantastic systemic to use: Imidacloprid
I use this everytime I've picked up those bastards, usually available at the big box home improvement stores:

Or pick up some Merit. It more potent.
Keep in mind, these products are systemics!

I have dealt with these before and springtails at the same time....big pain :wall:
Over in Europe a lot of products are banned too :cuss::cuss:
Personally I have used a Pyrethrum concentrate for root drenching took about 4-5 days then all gone, no damage to the roots either with Pyrethrum. Pyrethrum is a relatively low toxicity natural organic insecticide and since it breaks down quickly, generally has low environmental impact as well. Also it's supposed to come from the dried flower heads of chrysanthemums.
Just do not confuse it with Permethrin this a man-made insecticide version of it. :peace:

I have used it all, I use mallett 75 which is an old name for merit, still Imid. i also have optimate which kills those little bastards on contact and doesn't hurt the plant. but they always find a way back. it's tough running a perpetual and dealing with bugs. I like that this stuff eradicates the little bastards. Now I just need to find it.

can't find anywhere to buy either of these, got any new leads?
Just got off the phone w/local USDA.....It is off shelves awaiting the 10 year full approval vote. The last filing by Bayer didn't fit the filing requirements and the new paperwork has not arrived yet....SO,,,,,,( I was told it is around in the EU ).

Back to the 3 step method.....
Imid - I have not tried it. Others say it worked after several use's. I suspect reinfestation due to the eggs hatching. These little bastards are HARD to kill off.
Orthene, the last thing on the 3 step works to knock them down real hard. But the guy who had all the trouble kept getting them back...He's not known to be a good "clean" grower and stated he had to sanitize yet.....Nuff said there!

Back when I got them in my test grow......The only thing that worked - completely, was to do the whole 3 step and clean the hell out of the grow!

So then - 3 step.......and CLEAN the whole grow, everything! Under, over, around, behind, etc, etc.

i would try hydrogen peroxide first (4 water/1 peroxide) or watered down neem oil. neem oil will kill a plant if it is mixed too strong so take it easy. i have never had root aphids but that is how i deal with fungus gnat larvae that eat up roots. j

A oz of prevention is worth a pound of bud...
Ask your self how do people get infested with root aphids or any other pest to begin with ???
then ask your self why in the hell do i keep buying commercial soils , And putting my self through this shit ...
i have the easiest fix its called sterilizing all soils prior to entering your grow Space
