How to keep a mother.

I am new to the game and just have been buying clones at the start of every cycle but would love to stop having to do that. I have an extra t5 48 that i could set up to keep a ''Mother". My question is how long can i keep her vegging and how can i keep her small enough that it wont get out of control. Also i typically veg on a 20/4 light cycle. could i veg her less to save on energy use, what would be the least amount of light per day that would keep her from flowering. Thanks.

I kept a bonsai mother for nearly ten years before replacing her with a new clone... small pot, abuse and ignore until you're ready for cuts, then care as normally vegging. after taking cuts and to put her back on stasis mode, trim WAY back leaving only small nodes with leaves. then repeat the cycle.

If your careful you can skip moms completely - just take 1-2 clones from each plant the first week of flowering and by harvest you'll have a rooted, 7-8 week old clone, ready to veg or flower.
