I never had good results with 400w hps

You really don't need extra bloom nutes to get phat nuggz- a big waste of money AND increasing phosphorus makes for harsh smoke

I am getting vg results with leds and/or HOT5s.

What is needed is the right spectral balance + sufficient lumens per meter squared (look up umols)

I use Hydroponic-Research VEG+BLOOM- A ONE PART DRY FORMULA. Simply increase ppms for bloom

How many plants did you have under that 400w, and how far away was it? When I had my 400, it was air cooled, and I kept the glass 4-5 inchs from the tops of the plants. The smaller the light the closer it needs to be, and the less plants you belong running. Also how tall were the plant(s), a 400W light will not have much canopy penetration. If the plants were more then a couple feet tall, then the lower branches and bud sites would not be getting much usable light.

I agree with Pet about not needing to boost to much during flower. I run the same nute mix from the day they go into flower till the day I harvest them(for the most part). I also run a perpetual garden so I have plants that are young, and fully mature in the same flood tray all the time. I have always followed the KISS method, and feel its much more important to give the plants what they need, rather then any EXTRA other stuff, or overly high amounts of things.

You have to remember some of that denseness come from the packaging. A lot of people vacuum seal which squeezes the bag around the buds. Take those buds you have, throw em in a baggie and carry around in your pocket all day and at the end of the day the buds are packed dense as shit. Smaller but tighter.

strain has a lot to do with density, although packaging does have something to do with it too. for instance the sativa dominant skunk i grow is 2x the size but twice as fluffy as the blackberry haze, which is an indica dominant strain.
if you want dense resinous nugs, get an indica dom strain, and if you dont want the couch lock harvest it early

mines under a 400w too and i think strain is really the most important when it comes to density.

don't get me wrong though, some sativas produce dense nuggets, indicas are more renown for it though

well gosh dang so many variables. strain is a big one - but even a strain that produces dense nugs won't if it isn't allowed to completely mature. and then we have temperature - some strains seem to develop a looser structure in a warmer environment.

is achieved by
1- genetics
2- a good light
3- by useing hps for the second third of flower (this will give you rocks if it is in genetic profile sum genetics will only produce fluffy buds)

well isnt that cute, but its...! there is only one variable that will cause significant tangible variation in bud tightness, and that is light. hps "red" produces light airy buds, if u flower under "blue" such as MH, it produces much denser, tighter buds. go do some reading on it :)

Honestly easiest way for rock hard nugs get urself a good indica..lsd is pretty hard. Use a hps for all of flower, and if u top it and open her up to get more light ull get more hard.nugs rather then a few

Also I had pretty dense nugs when I ran a 400 watt also depends on hiw big of an area I would say no.more than 4 3gal or smaller plants

No you have it almost backwards. Hps (red spectrum) produces solid flowers during the flowering stage and the MH (blue spectrum) is for a tighter node structure. Not saying you don't get good buds from MH only haven't tried it you can with only 1 hps though.

Some strains are dense some aren't. I juster finished a cycle of purple diesel and the black '84. The purple is super dense and the black is light and fluffy, both are covered in crystals.
