how to get funkier buds...?

Let me begin by saying i grow some great nugs. But bag appeal is very important. I hand trim, they look the part, nice green fluffy buds, but the smell isn't like some I see, so i thought it was the strains I had or it has to do with harvesting on the earlier side and not doing a proper cure...

I want the stuff you can smell on somebody when its in there pocket three isles down in the grocery store...

What do you guys think?

That can be strain dependent and also drying curing play a large part. How dry do you let them get, how well do you trim, and how long do you cure?

I run 8 lights so theres a lot of trimming but i manage it by hand tho i love my trim bowl lol... I just got few new strains which makes it very difficult as they all react different to feedings, I'm use to the same afghan kush strain but it lacks the smell but I'm figuring them out and searching, right now I got a cheese, ak47, critical plus, blueberry cheese. I got them all going to see what I get as far as yeild, smell, stature so on... So I'm putting in the work n like I said, I trim very good, but i do tend to harvest a little early which i think could affect it. Now, with all this being said, i harvest 8 lights at once, it blows, I'm separating into a perpetual routine tho to space out the work. One table a week or 4 every month, its undecided. Anyways, I've tried to hang dry, paper bags, quite a few ways, but its a little difficult with this quantity at times. I hate to say it but my best results to date have been using totes, i put a box fan on top of blowing out, it sucks the air out fast, 2days or so, in dark, keeps them green ya know, then its crucial to get it just right, I'll cap the totes to bleed any stems, make sure there ready, then off into large jars, burp daily for week or so. Now with that being said I admit i could cure much longer, i could leave buds on moist side but Ive always had bad luck doing so. Bad luck meaning mold or paranoia of mold lol... So I hope these strains give me input, only day 3 of flower but time will tell. Also I Dont really flush like alot of people either. Always told not nessecary if you do a proper cure which is a debate all itself. To be clear, my bugs smell great, just not super strong n i realize harvest and curing are the most essential part that make or break a crop. So I'm working on it, but I guess I wanna know where can i best focus my efforts?

Just run the new Strains and do a longer cure time?

Of course it's always best to harvest at peak potency, but even then the drying and curing are the key. I used to jar them earlier, now I do a longer controlled drying before I jar. At times too I will take them back out of the jar if it feels like I need to. Honestly I think drying and curing is an art in and of itself. I use plastic containers when doing the controlled drying. There is more surface area and I find it easier to move the buds and they dry more evenly. This can take up to a week at times. Basically for me its usually about a week drying on the stem, trim buds off stem, place in plastic containers and put lid on and take it off as needed until I hit about 62% humidity and they feel right. Then jar, and check on them periodically until you know they are good and don't require burping and more drying, and leave them for awhile to cure. Overall a month / month and a half.

Are you wet or dry trimming?

Wet trimming. It seems so much easier...

I couldn't imagine hanging whole plants upside down. Plus I grow in rockwool, trying netpots and hydroton on few tables this round tho, its getting expensive, all the rockwool. Anyways, I usually do a sog setup so there small but i average close to oz each but i pack them in very tight. Which makes hang drying a nightmare. As if feeding 5 new strains properly wasn't a headache already. I just put 6 -12 cuts each into flower. But I have to consider a lot before switching my whole setup to a new strain. All the moms and cutting I need, But I was gonna add 4 more lights here soon, so I'd love to change it up, pick my best 2-3 strains and run them perpetually, doing 1-2 tables wk. Im rambling....

What do you guys find to be most crutial? Slow dry? Slow cure? Hand trim? Darkness? Ripeness?

I always wet trim but have been lazy a few times and let them dry untrained, never noticed any difference. I tend to pick plants early as well (earlier than most here), and that does tend to make for less earthy tones (not sure if that's a correct term, I'm a hydro guy lol). Putting them in jars to early also effects the flavour and smell. I'm no expert because smell was never a priority for me, potency was the key factor. And yes strain choice has a lot to do with it I think.

This article I read sayes Dont use ona, it kills the terps??? I use a lot of ona but sounds like paranoia.

I feel more nose comes out of a dry trim. Yes its a bit harder then wet butt................ And you don't hang whole plant, you branch the plant out and hang on lines. Sounds like you got an awesome set up!

Dry trim vs wet trim.....it think the correct choice all comes down to the rh in your area. Dry trim is better for me when I have low humidity, it dries slower and more thoroughly....but it's a bigger pain in the dick.
Chopping early means the terpenes haven't fully developed, which will mean decreased aroma. Don't harvest early if you want the smells, if you have to squeeze a bud to get an aroma then it's probably not ready.
If you're looking for a stinker that stays colorful I would suggest Plushberry. It's the most complex terpene profile I've experienced in a long time

I've learned that in low humidity environments a wet trim kills the smell.

The last 4 harvests I've had have been dry trim which SUCKS and is a lot of work, but sooooo worth it.

And yeah, let the plant mature. Lots of chemical profiles develop and change in those last few days....

this is part of your problem, ona stands for ODOR NEUTRALIZING AGENT. it sucks the odor out of your plants, it's meant to use around the grow room, not in it.

Genetics,genetics,genetics

And growing your plants without deficiency or toxicity.

Thats how you get funker buds imho.

I have some growing now that have no smell at all really and they are week four of flower. Hope it kicks up a bit when I jar them :(. First time I haven't worried about replacing the carbon.
