when they need it
and how u tell is:
let the soil just begin to dry at the surface and when u can notice by touch/vision its looking dry its time to water, if its easier, with a smaller plant, simply pick the whole pot up, if it feels light, then water (feel it after watering for a comparison)
also: dont wait till ur plant starts to beg for it , i.e drooping

and water till you get a little bit of runoff out the bottom of the pot

Hello, well the only real way to see if they need to be watered is to check down in the soil about a half of inch and see if it is dry. If so water your plant and make sure you get all of your soil wet and have some extra water runoff.. Small containers dry out quicker and require more water than large container plants.
