no way, cooooool that HID. The heat that omits from these lights is intense, and if you want to get that light as close as possible without burning or stressing the plants ya gotta air cool the hood. I have a 400 hps that ran in the 90's without an air cooled hood. now i am running 76-80 and keep the light 10 inches away if i wish to. It doesnt take a great deal of effort to air cool it yet it makes a huge difference

i use a 400w mh and dont use a cooling reflector but my reflector is a giant taco ufo 4ft in diameter. its aweful!! lol.

unless of course you want fatter buds by being able to have the lights closer to the plants.

cool the light, you wont regret it.
my light is 7 inches from my plant. I have no cooling reflector. and i havent burnt a single leaf on any of my plants. and if you put your hand between my plants and my bulb it is not that hot.

i think the cooling reflector is an added expense. if you are going to use a bulb over 600w and definitely anything above that. its advisable. but for a 400w its not necessary.

get some good airflow and he'll be fine! :)

your light is pretty close, so yeah i agree that things are working for you... but if you look at your reflector, it is a cooling type... see the light coming out the top? that is a heat vent ;)

well it only cost me $50 brand new so i really doubt its a cooling type. some of the light coming from the top has to partly do with the fact that i made it more of a taco then a circle shape so it would fit in my grow area.

but its not labeled to be cooling. and it was only $50 so i highly doubt it is. but if you say so!

i am not saying that it is a specific cooling type of reflector... i am saying though that there is an obvious venting of heat going on, that is all :D

oh okay. lol
cause after that i went to go search on it to see if it said something about cooling or whatever. but it doesnt even have a brand name on it. its something that you screw together on your own. came in 4 panels.

Hey ive done a grow with a 400w mh with out a the air cooling. Im not a pro but i think if your in soil u should be fine i didnt have any problemss. I was always avoiding the light when foliar spraying. When i switch to hydro i had to cool the light because it put my res at 85 degrees. If i were you and didnt want the air cooling get a bat wing, i think thats the best way to get the most out of a 400w. and thats all i have to say about that. PEACE
