I know i am new to this site. But i have seen a few posts about people who are shocked when they see their electric bill at the end of the month after they start their first grow. So below i will write down a formula so you can see what your new grow system will cost you per month before you start.
1. Add up all used watts from each item. lights, Fans, AC unit ect For CFL growers add USED wattage not output wattage
2.figure out how many hours a day the lights will be on ( veg 18 hours or Flowering 12 hours ect. )
3. you will multiply your total wattage per grow area by the number of hours you have the lights on ( if i use 600 watts and the lights in my veg room are on 18 hours a day, my total watts used will be 10,800 )
4. find out how your power is billed, find a electric bill this will tell you. where i live its billed by the KWH ( kilo watt hour )
5. take the total watts used per 18 hour period and divide this by 1 KWH ( 10,800 divided by 1 = 10.8 kwh per 18 hour cycle )
6. Look on your power bill to see the price you get charged per unit of power ( mine is 7.5 cents per hour i will round this up to 8 )
7. Take the total units of power used (KWH is 10.8 ) multiply it by the price per unit ( .08 x 10.8 = .86 cents ) so it would cost me .86 cents per 18 hour day in a veg cycle
8. now take the .86 cents and multiply that by how many days are in the month ( November has 30 days so 30 x .86 = 25.80$ US to run a 600 watt system per month
so for people who like math formulas here it is for you
1. Total watts x hours in use = Y ( 600 x 18 = 10.800)
2. Y / by 1 KWH = Z ( 10.800 Divided by 1 = 10.8 )
3. Z X .08 cents = N ( 10.8 X .08 = .86 cents )
4. N x days in the month = ???? all depends on the month you are in when this is read. ( .86 X November = 25.80$
I hope this helps some of the new growers and old ones alike. nothing worse then growing for a month to find out your bill just went up 150$. at least this can help save you the heart attack once the bill shows up. also it allows you to help set up your monthly budget.
Happy growing guys
