How much noise to expect

I realise this might be a hard question to answer but I just wondered how much noise is my extraction fan going to make?
I’m probably looking at a 5” (possibly 6).
im going to hang it rather than attach to try cut down vibrations, and also try keep any bends to a minimum.
I’m ok with wood so am happy to build a sound box if needed but I just thought I ask.
milk obviously find out when I eventually buy and turn it on lol.
it will be in my garage so smell and noise are big points for me (like many I suppose )

Depending on make, shouldn't be hard to do one that's pretty silent. Rhino for filters. You don't have to break the bank buying extractor fan, look in the forum's here.

Vortex fans are loud, a 450CFM will be around 88 - 94 decibels. a cheap inline fan rated at 440CFM will be around 82 - 86 decibels. And to lessen vibration when hanging your fan and cf with straps, use pipe insulators on your tent pole overhangs with zipties hangers, that your fan and cf straps will be hung from. And as a side note, if you buy one of them cheap inline fans, pull the fan blade out and use a cheap R/C prop balancer to balance it, because most are not balanced worth a shit and that is biggest cause of unnecessary vibration in those fans!

Pull the fan blade out, any chance explaining that a bit more mate.

I have an AC Infinity S6 (6 inch inline fan) and it's great quality. I would add that the grow tent is in my home office, and I can't have the fan on anything other than 3/8 of the power settings before it gets too loud. Maybe in your garage you could go much higher with the power settings before noise becomes an issue.

I've never used a muffler but am thinking now I might look into one.

The muffler will lower the sound say if it is vented outside...i.e. the sound through the tube is reduced. The motor that runs and makes noise is not quieter...so i dont think it helps your situation. You would actually want a 8" fan or 2 of the 6" fans to solve your issue. Imo they are cheap! Add a 2nd and you can go to 3 and have double the flow.

I could run some tests and post results. I have 2 4" exhausts out and can wait for quiet evening and measure db output with 1 and 2 on full. Its pretty quiet at 10' away. Up close with both on full it is quieter than most laundry exhausts.

Thanks for mentioning! I was wondering how the muffler could reduce the sound of the inline fan; good to know it only muffles the sound from the exhaust tube.

I like your idea of using two inline fans or an 8" fan..hadn't thought of that. Hope this helps OP as well!

Tornado box fan. Get a 8 inch and it will have have 2 sites to add ducting and 8 inch and 6 inch, use the 6 inch, get a speed controller could be even too powerful but as quiet as can be.

Get the 6 in ac infinity t6 or s6 it doesn't mater check ebay for lower prices... look up they website and you can find the decibel level for exactly model you want... i had t6 and an s4 running 24 hours a day in my bedroom at one time... it was loud to say the least they do sell mufflers tho and you can double them up if you dont mind the reduce cfm
