How much H2O do the roots displace?

I'm designing a new system and am going over some things in my head from my 'secret garden' that I had about 4+ years ago.

One thing I always wondered about was how much room my roots were taking up. There isn't a good way to measure the amount of water added to the system. I had a RDWC - 6 site (5 gal buckets) + the heart cell (5 gal) so I always assumed 7 buckets x 5 gallons = 35 gallons. While that may be true during veg I'm not certain that's the case 6 weeks in to flower. I always adjust my nutrients and 'mixed' based on about 20-25 gallons due to the H-U-G-E root mass I had in my buckets. My TDS were always in an acceptable range but it always drove me crazy not knowing exactly how many gallons were in my system at any given time.

  • Is there a meter that can be screwed on the end of a garden hose that will tell you how many gallons you added to your system?

  • What has been your experience?

I guess I could always fill up a gallon milk jug 1 by 1 and count the number of gallons but that it too tedious and time consuming.

How do you do it?

THANKS!

I use 5 gallon jugs of ro. I always know exactly what's in my rdwc. Sounds like we have very similar setups! :)

I'm fortunate to have well water so I don't need RO water. I just hang my hose in the heart cell and fill it up. I just wish I had a way to measure the amount of water I was adding. . .

I'd never use anything but ro. Even if I had well water. Ro is a clean slate, with absolutely no pathogens or anything in it. All hydro SHOULD use ro.

...And I've never used anything but well water and have had some PHENOMENAL results. . . I'm certain my well water is pathogen free as well since I've never gotten sick.

Do you have anything to add to this thread or are you just trying to be a **** ?
How am I being an/a ****? Chill... I'm just saying I personally wouldn't use it. You go ahead and do so. But a lot of hydroers would agree, r/o is the way to go.

What is the PPM of your well water?

I haven't checked the PPM of my well water in years. I've been out of the game for 4-5 yrs. As I understand it the main purpose of RO water is to remove the Chlorine and Fluoride and anything else the Municipalities add to make us 'healthy'. I don't have to worry about that. My water is good. REALLY good. Drink a glass of municipal water and them drink a glass of mine and you'll swear that mine isn't water. Beyond that I think I'm good. I never had any problems when I was using the well water. Quite honestly prior to that when I lived in the city I used tap water without filtering it. The girls didn't seem to mind that either....

Well why don't you just stick your TDS meter in some and find out, eh?

The roots don't displace that much water..surprisingly. In my 90gal UC system, there's about 75-80 gal in the system by harvest.

You can get a garden hose meter at any of the major building retailers. Try get one that is mechanical and stay away from the digital ones. I found the digital ones are inaccurate unless you open the valve the same amount ever time.
