How much electricity usage is too much?

Guaranteed. They aren't trying to report anyone. Cannabis is good for the energy business LOL
And Smart meters don't KNOW anything, they use algorithms to guess what your using. So they can be fooled. But id be more worried about loose lips than the energy company who is making money off you and loving anyone's high bills.

"a process where its computer algorithms can be used to learn the different power loads in a house over a week or two depending on how often each is used"

They might not "know" but they got mine dead on the money as far as I can tell, I'll post the letter if I get another. Everyone here keeps talking about the companies won't snitch on you because of their making money but its a drop in the bucket compared to their other business. They won't go looking for you but they will comply with any request from LEO and if they were to somehow to find out you're growing they'd call on you in a heartbeat.

So your bill said how much grow light usage your using? I find that very hard to believe, especially when you have a hobby grow like me from memory.

Its already been said they won't come after you for a large electric bill, but if they have just a tip you aren't busted YET, the judge probably won't issue a warrant strictly on a tip. They get the records and use that as additional evidence to get a warrant

Its not an option. The power company controls everything leading up to, and including, the meter. After that its you and the building inspector.
I just read you can opt out in California, but you have to pay 75 bucks up front and 10 bucks extra a month.

Ok, in sticky's own words from his thread https://www.rollitup.org/t/ttystikks-vertical-goodness.787572/page-210#post-13418105 :

No rat. They told me they used my power bill.
I couldn't find the part where he explained it in detail. Maybe he cleaned it up. If he did, it was a good idea..............
First post. Where OP did explain it in detail

"The police came and knocked on my door, answering a smell complaint. I showed them my paperwork and we went and had a thorough tour of my op."

Different visit. That one was in 2015. Which is probably why he let them in the second time. The more recent visit was last year.
Im assuming in legal states, you are pretty much always liable to have someone drop in, unannounced to make sure you are within compliance. This is an entirely different issue.

It also means that the police already knew he grows. As its a legal grow even the county and state knows he grows. as he has filed the relevant paperwork.
Why would the police need to contact the electricity company when they can just look at their own records?

Well, you should ask him I guess. If you want a swag, my take is they (the state of CO) have been trying to find the coop growers. So they have been asking the power companies for lists of residential users with higher than normal power use. He probably popped up in a drag net of homes, and when they looked up his address, they saw he was a licensed med grower and decided to pay a visit.

Just because you use LED's doesn't mean you don't use power. A 1000w of LED light uses the same power as a 1000w of HID. They also put out the same amount of heat. Sure, you can get some savings since in some cases you can get away with fewer watts of LED, but it isn't a huge amount. And when you have 5k-10k watts in use, plus AC, you will stand out.

He just happened to be over the limit by enough they could pick him out in a fishing expedition. Again, I have ZERO first hand info. I'm just going by what he posted, probably in too much detail.

But it still shows that they can, and do, use your power bill to look for pc for a warrant.

No it doesnt. He was a registered grower. Normal logic for growing does not apply when LEO already knows you grow...

Sounds like he was either ignorant of the actual laws on the books or was willingly skirting them...

I always knew tty was "special" but daaaaaaamn.

No it doesn't. It shows that a Police officer said they used the power company. Police are human and humans lie.
They could call at any time without a warrant to see if he is In compliance with the law, if what a prev poster wrote is true.

The vast majority of illegal indoor grows bypass the meter for starters. Its easy and means more profit.

But his power bill went down. He went from using HID, to Cobs. You can use less W for the same light as your well aware and it is less heat because your not heating a Gas . But we don't need to go into W for W or heat of each. We all know the drill on that.

Yeh, its easy to bypass the meter and even easier to get busted for it. Now you do have the power company looking for you. That's exactly how the neighbors got busted.

A guy here just burnt his house down last night by doing it. Gives growers a bad name.

yeh, it made me nervous because they only found one guy at home and they parked at the house and cruised the neighborhood for two days waiting on the other two to showup.
