How Much Cooler is a Cob than HID? Pics

Thanks for the replies! I think reading the posts here is kind of a... "you don't what you don't know until you know"?? Or something like that.

@SupraSPL I've read about IR and lack of IR via COB's. Is the lack of this a bad thing? I seem to perceive reading through here that the pros of the COB's outweigh their shortcomings?

@Rahz Understand to an extent what you mean, I'm assuming you are talking about the potential of energy, ie watts, and that there is never any energy "wasted", however.. I'm curious about the amount of heat via radiation from HID/COB and may be borrowing the work/IR camera to document heat temps/properties more as this goes along. The good news is, there will be another 220watts of COB in near future to compare to. However, the HID is still a single bulb vs several.

Thanks again all!

If you look at the spectral output you can see there is some IR but it's maybe 3% relative output which would end up being well under 1% total. The 90 CRI does have a bit of IR but most people aren't using high CRI... It would still be a small amount though.

If you end up doing canopy measurements I'd be curious what you come up with.

I look at the lack of IR as a good thing. IR is not very photosynthetically active so it would be ideal for the light source to allocate as much of its energy in the visible/PAR range as possible. As far as temp in the grow space, if it is too cold you can recirculate and/or reduce ventilation power. For most varieties keeping the canopy temps cool (75-78F) will result in a faster finish with more dense, stickier, more potent, flavorful bud. IME that is a huge advantage for LED vs HID.

I'll do just that. I can take some area/average measurements under a few diff lights and post. I think there may be some bias as different watts, but more information can't be a bad thing.

Thanks again!
