How much bubble do you look for in your bubbleponics/DWC?

I have a 18 gallon bin that will veg 2-3 plants at a time. I purchased two 18" air stones for it with a 2600 cc/min pump that is rated for 20-60 gallon fish tanks.

Granted this is my first hydro grow - but I'm just not happy with my bubbles. First off these stones are going to go eventually for some better more micro sized bubble producing stones but budget is a bit of a concern at the moment.

Second - I just feel like I should have more circulation. Its ok, definitely seems like enough to do what I need... but I'm heavily thinking of going back for another pump and a couple T's to run one pump per airstone. (These are dual outlet pumps) They're only $11 anyway.

dual diaphragm, 4 outlet pumps,,,,,

i run 3 of these in each cooler, 6 inch Elite AirStones

need lots of little bubbles,,,,,,,,

64 bucks ea. and worth every penny

i like my bigass 80 watt comerical ones, with bubble ponics you cant have to many bubbles, the more the better, youll know when you see it, it should be churning in there.

I'll be headed back to pick up the second air pump in a little bit. Going to T the two outlets together to feed one stone per pump. If that doesn't work I'll be returning them and picking up a different pump (one like the picture in Bloomers pics) on Tuesday or Wednesday.

For the flowering area I'll be using a commercial grade pump to get LOTS of air going. I was just hoping to keep this veg operation a little more quiet as this will be in my bedroom!

I picked up the second pump and it worked like a charm having one pump per 18" stone. I let it run for a while and I have a ring of mist where you can see the bubbles are popping their mist about 3 inches above the water line.

However I still feel like I could use more... so I may upgrade to a dual diaphram pump the local shop had for $65 bucks. Looks identical to the ones Bloomer is using.

Returning these two will get me $23ish back in my pocket... so its only a $40 upgrade... right? :)

The hydro store did not have any hydroton in stock in the smaller bags. Only if I wanted a gigantic bag. So I am giving the coco croutons a shot.

So far, so good. I removed the seedlings from the soil... and used a sprayer to get the soil off the roots. Didn't break anything off. Moved them all to the net pots with coco, then watered them with the pH'd and 75 ppm of nutes I setup in the reservoir. I only went to a pH of 5.7 today as I didn't know if they would go in some sort of shock between soil and a hydro setup and suddenly drinking up water at a much different pH. Will be going to 5.5 in the future. The little ladies looked fine right after I put them in there. I put them under my HPS at a distance and plugged the pumps back in. Within 30 minutes they drooped and fell over. I misted them and hand watered again at that time. 30 minutes later - they are now standing at full attention again.

What I really liked was the amount of moisture on the sides of my net pots and in the coco in the root area. I probably wont hand water again but once a day till roots come down, but I'm not even sure if that is necessary.

Thanks for all the help guys... hope this keeps going like this!

If you have enough bubble action that the sides of the netpots are wet you don't need to hand water. The real test is to check the wetness of the medium on top. Hand watering is dangerous - people tend to overdo it and cause stem rot.

dp, you think you have lots of bubbles now? with the dual diaphragm pump use 6 inch stones you'll have a jacuzzi going, and blue air line.

glad it's working for ya,,,,

The croutons on top are not moist but the croutons that are right under that top layer are moist. I havent hand watered since yesterday evening and I dont think I'm going to either.

im going to keep my current stones for a couple weeks but i have my eyes on a couple of dual stone setups that are supposed to create lots of micro bubbles.

My pH jumped up to 6.3 after a few hours last night. Im assuming that was from the coco croutons being hand watered. I took it back down to 5.75 last night and it was the same this morning. So all seems to be going perfect.

I am currnntly onlu only flowering one and I have an extra 20 watt comercial airpump, one of the gray six manifolds on eBay right now for 54 bucks and it is therefore in a five gallon bucket with one plant. Lol! The water is roiling and popping up like a typhoon. The plant did fine on a 3.5 watt pump. It loves this too.

The rule i always read was one watt a gallon. So my 20 watt is going to be for 4 buckets soon.
