so I’ve been seeing this asked alot on the internet bottom line is more the better people say you can only have xx amont under you light and all of the numbers i see are so low you want to have efficiency in you grow room use as much of the light as possible the way I figure out how many plants I should have I do some simple math we will do a 1000 watts each plant will grow good under 20 to 25 watts a piece
1000/20=50 plants
1000/25=40 plants
this is the way you figure out how many plants you should have about a square foot for each plant so if you can’t put that many in you grow room you’re wasting light don’t buy a 1000w for a room that’s 4-4 feet you’re wasting light and electricity
This is how I get 1gpw to 1.6gpw depending on strain
600/20=30
600/25=24
400/20=20
400/25=16
Simple anyone that tells you less is not getting the gpw that they want
I veg for 1 week then straight in to flower plants are about 24” when done

25 watts a plant sounds pretty meager. I shoot for 125 watts+ a plant. But then again I prefer to grow a few big plants rather than a bunch of small ones. But in any case thats a pretty cool chart and fair breakdown on figuring it out. At least a place to start. Well done.........

What size pots do you flower in? Like a 2qt-1gal? I feel ya. I understand cash cropping. I grow for myself though and find it so much easier to tend a few big plants than a bunch of small ones. But its all about personal style and what works for you. Thats the best part of having our own gardens! I have been playing with supercropping and lst. And gotta say one plant, vegged and trained correctly can produce an impressive yield. But then again, more work. LOL

This could be a interesting thread. (something of great interest to me at this point).
Just starting to bring stuff together, I'm only interested in a small personal medi grow.

2 boxes-
For a mother - 14"X16"x30" tall. (1 plant)
For buds - 23"X23"X40" (3 plants set triangular fashion)

Both boxes willbe lined with mylar and using CFLs (3@ 18 watt / 3 @ 23 watt) Think I'll need more(?).

Originally, with the mylar and small size I figured I could mount the lights to the top of the grow box and simply move the plants down as they grow. Plan is to super crop & lst with a short time before flower.

However, from what I gather from other threads, I'll need to significantly increase my lighting. While from other post I could get by with what I have.

The more I learn the less I know. All very confusing. Not going monster grow, just small & personal to relieve some disabilitating pains. Probably a 1/4 lb a year is more than enough here. I hate buying!!! (and what I get for the money)

So I'll be watching this one with major interest.
Thanks.

I've grown outdoors in the past a few times. But, things are getting scarry with the increase in population and the closeness of my gardening spot. Moving indoors to be discreate.

I feel ya, no doubt. Whats your gram per watt yield? Varitety is def the spice of life.

That's just a cool tube. You'll still need a ballast and bulb. CMH bulbs max at 400w and run off of magnetic core ballasts, I believe the ANSI code is S51, but I would have to double check that.

Thanks, Realized the mistake and changed it after.
Think I'll Google and see what best price I can come up with.

By the way, thanks for the guidance! I'm sure you all saved me some grief in the long run.
I'll save the CFLs for clones and such while small. (maybe):hump:
thanks

The second light isn't right either. It has a ceramic socket, but not a CMH bulb.

Here is what I recommend:

http://htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=47929

http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmed18.htm

If you are comfortable building ballasts than you can save a lot of money and just get everything through advancedtechlighting.

I DO NOT have any affiliation with those companies. They are just vendors I've used.

Checkout Riddlemes thread, Balls too the wall. Also here is a link to the CMH bulb I was referring too. http://www.growlightexpress.com/ceramic-metal-halide-bulbs-9/mastercolor-ceramic-metal-halide-400-watt-79.html And Thalboy was correct. Magnetic HPS ballasts only.

WOW!
Just came back too see what's added here and saw my greenhorn post! LOL
Anyways, I've been learning and studying since then (a whole 3 dats - lol).

Looking back, 25 w / plant. I'm only planning 4 at the most.
Seems my 6 little CFL's (123 watts) willbe just fine...... (for about 3 weeks )
Just long enough to get a combo in the mail. :hump:

After my 3 short days, seems I could get by with a 150 watt. But feel that's probably pushing it hard if I super crop and lst (intended).

250 watt sounds much better. Think I could live with the cost of elec on it. Would be much easier I'd think to place and cool. (remember, box grow)
However, 400 watts would give me way more oomph on the buds and probably a better (faster & better canopy & stem strength - ie; better plants)

Waiting for the next elec. bill to figure the operating cost. I'm really torn between the 250 / 400.
Thing being, I'll want at least 2 grow cabs. so I may just use the CFLs to run the cloning cab.
As mentioned, torned. 400 is hot in a small 32 sq. ft. box.

Anyways, thanks for steering me clear of frustartions in lighting down the road.

400 is the way to go it’s about as expensive to run as a tower pc that left on they are 600w most of the time unless you’re a gamer pluse 400hps bulbs are easy to get home depot has them 20$ if you need to get a new bulb I’ve hade problems shipping the bulb before makes for a shitty week
