how many should be grown under 400w mh hps?

depends on yer methode aswell..........lst, scrog sog lolipops monsters


i usually do 2 lst in 5 gallon buckets under my 400w hps, somtimes just one depending on what i need

good point..... i didn't even think............ may start with fems or grow several small ones pick out the males and grow the fems...... i use clones, i have a 2x2x3 mother room under my woork bench
 
the goal is to have 7000-10000 lumens per sq ft. this is what the sun creates, more or less. so lets say that a 400 watter puts out 40,000 lumens. 40000/7000 is 5.7 sq ft and 40000/10000 is 4 sq ft

so as many plants as you can jam in 4-6 sq ft of space.

most 400w hps lights put out 55,000 5-7000 lumens per sq ft. optimal 3000 minimum.......... add co2, bump you up to 10000 3x3 area would be perfect
 
I'd go with 1 or 2 in a DWC system and ScrOG the entire room. Could possibly pull close to 1 gram per watt like that.
