How many plants in a 3X3 tray?

How many plants can i put in a 3X3 tray, i am running a 400 watt HPS and am thinking on moving up to a 600 watt system, I believe a 400 watt bulb can effectively light a 4X4 area. (So it's a little overkill in a way) The main issue is how much room does each plant really need? Is 16 plants possible?

Was saying that 400w over 9 sq is abt 30% more than you need. 16 ft sq sounds right for 400 w to me, How many plants/sq ft is also a factor of how good the nutrient supply system is tho. I think if you try to pack em one to a sq ft both the light per plant and the note flow will suffer. I like to place them against a wall and train the secondary stems to the light. You can get 12-18 spacing. and have the front of the plant as a canopy. Was this close to what you were talking about ?

It's a ebb and flow setup, and it's a 3X3 tray I am going to put two of them side by side with a 400 watt HPS on a 8' light mover, I want to yield 1 1/4 pounds from that much grow area. I am figuring at least a ounce from each plant. (Rhino) I have been reading only 6 to 8 plants in a 3X3 area.

depends on type of grow. with no or little veg you can do more plants, or do 8 in 8 in buckets or 6 in cubes veg 2 to 3 weeks and pull 2 oz off each. I like no or little veg with more plants, gives you more harvests a year..

I am redesigning my grow room, and am thinking (2) 3X3 trays side by side or (2) 2X4 trays end to end, I have a light mover with a 8' track. I am also considering a homemade AeroFlo system, but have a lot of questions on the construction and use of it. (would like to build my own) I don't use buckets or pots, I started the seeds in a paper towel, then planted them tap root down in 1 1/2 inch rockwool cubes and put them into drip irrigation until they were 3 to 4 inches tall. then i moved them to a ebb and flow table that is 3X3, vegged them until the tallest one was around 8 1/2" then i put them on 12/12 three days ago, I am looking into the future for my next grow. I know I have too many plants in the tray right now (11) it's a little crowded, but i am planning on cloning the females, pulling the hermies and letting the the rest go. My goal is to stock up on seeds, get the most out of the buds, and make hash with the rest. Then the next grow will be all females, trying to figure out how to get at least 1 lb or more per grow.
