If I were going to DIY it, I'd agree.. nothing less than 3W a piece across the board... perhaps 5 5W UV ones total as well, one in each corner and 1 in the middle.. 120 degree.
The setup you had allowed you to hand-pick what you wanted to use? I have extremely high standards for bulb manufacturers, board creation, and mixes.. not to mention that drivers wouldn't be uniform across the board due to the partial mix of 3W vs 5W, and I like to do DIY as well
I didn't have say over the bulbs or color set up. It's a mix of blue and red spectrum all 3 watt diodes the light was about $500. If you have the ability to build yourself a panel using 5 watt diodes I would say go for it because your going to be getting like 60% more power over the 3 watt system.The setup you had allowed you to hand-pick what you wanted to use? It's in the cards at some point, but won't be soon. I'd love to see a panel of 3W bulbs with a about 5-8 5W UV ones, just to help w/trichome production.. 5-8 shouldn't be that overpowered, but also gives me the ability to write software and adjust the power of each in relation to a computer so I can dial it in as I want across the full spectrum. (Assuming I went 9 spectrum + IR, that is)
