how many lights?

I currently have a 8'x4'x7' tent that i bought from grow lab. I am doing a dirt grow with smart pots. I currently have 2 600 w hps lights with hoods and 2 600 w ballots. My questions are , should i buy another light for this size tent, should i do one large ballost for all the lights, and how many plants should i put in this tent? Thanks for the help guys

Nice set up. Im a newbster with knowledge. Im going to say according to some of the gteat growers ive met, it depens on how many plants youre planning to grow. One plant=150w or 10,000 lumens=1plant. I calculate vice versa. What i mean is i calculate by lumens instead of wattage but i know to understand wattage first. You look like you have enoough room 3000watts mh/hps= 240,000-600,000lumens. Also according to the pros, Id use metal halide(mh) for vegitation. And id use high pressure sodium lights for flowering. Depending on how long you want to veg over to flowering. Ive learned that its really never too much light. Keeping the lights about 3-5 inches above plant. And a close supervision on plants. Right humidity and exaust and light cooling on your ballasts or reflector lamps. Set your fans low for plants but not directly on them. And make sure your bulbs are being cooled. Im going to follow you i want to see some great gardening:clap: I hope that ive given you some good insight and im hoping a well known member drop some knowledge if theres no conformation of what i just gave you. I just got my tent yesterday. I have 4"6"2. Im only growing two plants but i have a 400w = 55,000 lumens/mh for vegging. And i have a 600w=86,000lumens/hps for flowering. So grow on brother.

5 to 6 inches with a 600w hps would burn ur plants 100%

2 x 600w is enough, 2 x 1000w is great, anymore than that is overkill. 14-18 inches away for 600w, 24 inches minimum for 1000w. That's with air cooled hoods. Add another 50% without. Anything under 18" means not much light gets to the periphery. Also, you can have too much light. You should research how much ventilation you need to cool both your grow area and your lights. You will surprised how much HID will heat up your tent. Most growers struggle with the heat.

I'm looking at a move to LED, so I would be looking to see if I could fit an LED in the middle of two 600's.

Vastly reduced heat and electricity consumption is a big appeal to me.

But if a 400w HPS covers an area of 3x3 ft then I would imagine a 600 covers an area of 4x4.

If you have two 600's that would then presumably provide suitable lighting for your tent.

You could go two 1000's, but then you have to deal with the heat.

I work out of 4x8's myself. 3 600s is perfect for that area, but 4 works great too. I run 1200w in veg, 1800w in summer, and 2400w in the winter. Also if you trellis you will double to triple your yield in those tents. here is a pic of one of my tents the day before flower.

here is a link to Sublbc's 2.4k tent too. He comes out and says he's slacking on this tent, but it's a good visual of what a 4 600w 4x8 tent looks like. I'm gonna start a journal here in the next few days, so you will have a good idea of what a 1800w set up will produce.

I keep my CFLs at 3-6 inches. an HPS or metal halide would surely burn the fuckshit outa your plants at that distance....... I dont even think a cooltube would help you that close.
I'm not puttin ya down, your' smart. but you might have confused that last little bit

I wouldn't have a 600w any closer than 12" and that's with good air flow, 18" with a 1000w. If a bulb is in a hood, the coverage is determined more by the shape, size and reflective efficiency of the hood than by the bulb or wattage. The Epics I use are rated to cover a 8'x8' area.

yes yes my fault. I did totally mean 3-5 on the cfls. What i did was i had the hole hook up with cfls and thats where i waa stuck on the distance for lights from plants. Then i just switched over mh/ hps just like that. Im glad you came with the knowledge. I said i wantef my first grow to be a blast. So i went with the 400w mh for veg and i also got a 600w hps for flowering.
No sir that was my fault i wasnt thinking:wall:

you will not be disappointed.. later buy better HPS bulbs but i will tell you i grew 80% with those bulbs and well go look at my journal you will see what it can do

Okay, so as of right now i have 2 600 watt hps ligt set up. I just put the clones in last night and am having some problems.
I already know it was too drt so i gave them water but im also getting yellow on leafs. Should i give them nutes this early?

Looking stressed and dry. Got good air flow? Why do you have them under HPS already? That small they should be under a T5.
