When growing weed from seed and not doing SOG, SCROG, or topping how long should I veg for before flowering?:weed::joint:

I would say it depends on your equipment, room and goal. How big is your room? How high are the ceilings? I believe a my 600 watt hps will penetrate about 3 ft of canopy and probably less for the hardcores. So although I have a 8 ft ceiling in my grow room it would be dumb of me to get over 3 ft. From what I have read my light will also cover a 5 x 5 foot space and others say 3 x 3 feet. If you have the space and equipment to go big then go big. What set up are you working with? That might help provide a better answer.

How is this question supposed to be answered? Veg until you think you are going to run out of room or lights I guess. like Brotherdoses says it depends on the light I 'think' a 400w covers 3x3 a 600 covers 4x4 , may be wrong. So under 400 with an indica you could veg until about a foot I guess?

He doesnt understand which is totally understandable....duh! There is no real length of time you have to veg mj plants for. You can go 12/12 right from seed and some do. I dont recommend that unless your growing 100 of them. Sog (sea of green) which means alot of small plants under one light usually uses a twoish week veg after the clone has rooted. A little longer from seed but great if you have lots of seeds. You end up with alot of popsical style plants. Not much side branching, just one stalk with about an oz on it. Scrog (screen of green) is when you place a screen over the plant and give it a much longer veg, the plant is kept under the screen and eventually fills the screen totally and then gets flipped to flower and stretches through the screen to flower. This takes months but if you only have one plant and you want to recoup funds in one shot its the way to go. The other way to do it is somthing in the middle which most people do. Just put her in when you think that its time with a couple bamboo steaks in there for support. The most important thing is controling the stretch. When they stretch the plant will at least double in size. Most of the time its closer to triple if you put them in on the smaller side but can be up to 5x. Big plants like 4 ft tall or more wont stretch as much as smaller ones. The answer to your question is however long you feel like, and have the space for. I hope some of the above helps you make a more informed decision, good luck and pm me if you have any questions ever. :):):)

Oh and i use a 600 in a 4x4 area and im pulling over a g/watt. Ive heard its the optimal size light for the area, i have a net rather than a screen and i use that to support the plants. I have large plants though. I cant help it, i just like the big ones :):):)

A lil' addition to what the guys above me said; keep in mind the longer u veg the longer it would take u to get to the final product.. How badly do u want to smoke?:eyesmoke:

BTW, out of curiosity what's the longest u guys ever vegged from seed?

Thank you everyone for your input. I'm gonna use a 5x5x7 tent with 1200w hps cause I read 1000w will cover 4.5. All of you gave me great info and I appreciate it. Just tired of paying 300 an Oz when I could save money on my own.

View attachment 2716955Flowering and veg cycles are completely up to the grower preference, you can induce flowering in a rooted one inch clone if you want or you could grow a sativa dominant plant 14 feet tall before you induce flowering its up to you... What it really comes down to is how much time you have to wait for the plant to grow big, and how much room you have for bigger plants (obviosly while practicing "supercropping" techniques in veg such as topping, bending,bansai-ing, FIMing, lollipoping ect...will multiply your yield as many times as your patience and percistance allows. Hygrohybrid has good advice and vids on youtube) Just one thing though you absolutly need a seperate veg and flower rooms to maintain a perpetual harvest and get enough yield to make paying the light bill worth your wile. As far as cloning taking a clone from a vegitative plant is the only way to go in my opinion because you take a clone from a flowering plant you risk waiting up to 2 months for it to revert back to vegitative growth and in the long run will cost you extra nutrients, inefficiently used space in your grow show, and money to veg it extra long before your desired size. Also another important side note you can grow them bushy and wide rather than tall... I will post a pic of my finished product of suppercropping plant. The plant in this pic yielded over a pound after it was dry and cured! it was only 20 inches tall, but almost 4 feet wide! you can manipulate these plants to grow however you want! I took this Liberty haze plant when it was 2 ft tall and slowly and carefully bent the top branch where it met the branch below it and in the opposite direction and where there is a gap between main branches bend the horizontal smaller branches that are coming off the main branches into the open space where it will get more light ( you can even convince the plant to make side branches by carefully bending the branch just above a new node, if you bend it until it either pops or can be completly bend to the point it can touch itself then the new node below it recieves hormones telling it that it is now the new "top" of this branch!) check the bends daily tape over any splits that happen, its ok if your new bends leave the leaves upside down it will revert back to facing upwards in a little as an hour! every 5 days bend some more creating a big round bush, also apply the other supercropping techniques listed above (except basai in this method)you can top again every 7-10 days or so, skys the limit. Cannabis plants are like hoes the more you smack them around the more they want to please you!

I am gonna use a 5x5x7 room with ether 2 400w or a 1000w

First I'd like to say I don't know much about hps since I grow with CFL, but as far as my understanding goes on growing MJ (well actually plants in general) that it's actually more of an issue of lumens (amount of visible light emitted) and kelvins (color temperature) rather than how many watts u have..
This is why CFL is considered to be.. Well how can I put it without raising hell.. :fire:
Is better the word? lol..

It uses less watts, thus producing less heat and yet it gives out enough lumens..
It's cheaper, cooler, environmentally friendly and IMO better for beginners..

Oh yeah forgot to get to the point.. lmao
I think 2 400W would be better since u'd be getting better light coverage..
