how long do lights last

Bulbs can have a theoretical lifespan of 5 years+, but the amount of lumens it puts out will gradually decrease over this time. Best to change it once a year to keep your growroom at peak efficiency.

My last 150 HPS bulb went bad within like 2 months...The light would look white..Lost its golden glow. It could've been a defective bulb

In a word, No. HPS are the most efficient lights, followed by MH, then MV.
HPS are more suited to flowering, as they put out the red end of the spectrum that plants use during this stage of their life. MH and MV give off more of the blue light that plants need during their vegetative stage.
