How long can I germ seeds in a cup of water?

I have a few seeds in a cup of water that just cracked today (18hrs). They have little or no tap root yet so my question is, can I leave them in water until the tap roots grow a bit, like 1", or will they rot.

Always used paper towels to germ before so this is new to me....any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can most certainly leave then in i would however refresh the water a lil bit the main problem with letting it grow longer is u run the risk of damaging it when u deposit it into your medium

+1 for what green said...except make sure to let the new water set for a little while so the seeds won't be thrown into shock....I've done this before and I've had my seeds last for close to a week before a couple started rotting...I like the paper towel method though

i was wondering, if i keep a seed in a half cup of water with a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide, could i then transfer it to the wet paper towel?

Just put it in wet paper towel, inside a baggie, on top of something like your stereo or something that generates a LITTLE warmth. Cover it to keep it dark.

i used wet paper towels and put them in a cake dome and then on top of the cable box, works great every time in about 36 hours.

You don't want to soak your seeds too long. Pre-soaking is o.k. to soften the tough outer hull but try not to exceed 2-4 hrs. Use distilled water if at all possible. These are seeds, NOT clones. Then as mentioned above transfer to wet paper towel or napkin layer. One mistake ALOT of people make is to forget to trap a decent amount of air in the baggie as you seal it up. Remember the seedling will need some air as soon as that tap root pops. Think of it as a mini- greenhouse dome. If you have a cabinet above your refridgerator, this usually works well as the fridge heats rises and warms up the cabinet plus it's already dark in there.
